Body: From http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-09-11-voa30.cfm Arabic Public School Opens in NYC September 11, 2007 One of New York City's smallest public schools is probably one of the most controversial – the Khalil Gibran International Academy. The Brooklyn middle school, devoted to Arabic language and culture, opened its doors for the first time this week as the city's new academic year got underway. Some 50 sixth graders arrived at their first day of school to heavy security and a gaggle of press. They are in the spotlight because they are the first to attend New York City's new Arabic school, Khalil Gibran International Academy. Title: Endangered Language Hotspots and the Enduring Voices Project
Body: From http://www.nationalgeographic.com/mission/enduringvoices Every 14 days a language dies. By 2100, more than half of the more than 7,000 languages spoken on Earth—many of them never yet recorded—will likely disappear, taking with them a wealth of knowledge about history, culture, the natural environment, and how the human brain works. National Geographic's Enduring Voices Project strives to preserve endangered languages by identifying language hotspots—the places on our planet with the most unique, poorly understood, or threatened indigenous languages—and documenting the languages and cultures within them. Read more about the project and the identified language hotspots at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/mission/enduringvoices .

Title: Cultural Interviews with Chinese-Speaking Professionals
Body: From http://www.laits.utexas.edu/orkelm/chinese Cultural Interviews with Chinese-Speaking Professionals is a compilation of brief video clips in which Chinese-speaking professionals discuss cultural issues that are of interest to North Americans. The objective of the interviews is three-fold: First, provide practical cultural information about business topics. The opinions represent those of real people. At times they are even contradictory, but they are designed to be a catalyst for discussion, not a definitive answer about some stereotype. Second, the interviews provide vocabulary in areas within a professional setting. The interviews present diverse vocabulary within the context of each individual's comments. Third, these materials provide non-native speakers of Chinese with multiple examples of natural speech, illustrating the way that speakers really talk. Topics include courtesy, negotiation, and stereotypes. The videos are available at http://www.laits.utexas.edu/orkelm/chinese .

Title: Resources for Learning Indonesian
Body: An LLTI listserv user suggests the following resources for learning Indonesian: http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Indonesian/Default.htm ** all sorts of resources, including "learn Indonesian in 7 days" http://www.groups.yahoo.com/groups/warung_sate_kambing ** e-mail group for learners of Indonesian and Indonesian learners of English http://indodic.com/langlearn.html ** various linguistic things Some more sites: http://www.hello-indonesia.com/HelloIndonesia/Language.htm http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Indonesian (wikipedia online instruction) These are all at the basic introductory level. A site about living in Indonesia http://www.expat.or.id Many school textbooks come out of Australia where IndonesianFL is taught more across school systems, I'm guessing, than other countries, such as * Kenalilah * Bagus Sekali series * Keren Johnston, S. Re: #8635.1 (!) Indonesian language materials. Language Learning and Technology International Information Forum (LLTI@LISTSERV.DARTMOUTH.EDU, 19 Sept 2007).

Title: Lecture Series by Heinrich August Winkler
Body: From http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/bos/en2429352.htm Prof. Heinrich August Winkler, the prominent historian from Berlin’s Humboldt University, and author of the recent book, Germany: The Long Road West (Oxford University Press, 2006) will will speak at Harvard University and the Goethe-Institut Boston. September 24, 4:15 pm Still a Community of Values? Historical Reflections on the Normative Basis of the West Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies 27 Kirkland Street, Cambridge 02138 The European Union is often referred to as community of values. But, in the geographical sense, Europe never established a community of values. The values referred to by the European Union are the values that Western Europe has in common with the great democracies of the Western world. The lecture follows the West’s long path to the division of power, the inalienable rights of humankind, and pluralistic democracy. September 25, 6:00 pm The Long Way West: A Farewell to the German Question Goethe-Institut Boston For almost two hundred years, the "German Question“ preoccupied the Germans, Europe, and the world: from the time of the dissolution of the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation“ in 1806 to the unification of Germany on 3 October 1990. This lecture is concerned with the question of why Germany, much later than Great Britain and France, became a national state and even later a democracy. For more information, go to http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/bos/en2429352.htm .
