Title: Ideas for Building a Model of a Roman House
Body: Here are some experiences from LatinTeach users on building models of a Roman house in their classes: My students made a room in a shoe box, a diorama of sorts. Details counted. They photocopied frescos for the walls, made furniture, clay pots to scale, even compluvium-impluvium with the box cover and clay tiles, etc. We placed the rooms on the floor as they would be in a standard Roman floor plan; different sized shoe boxes made it interesting not rectangular--the only drawback unless you supply all one size boxes. It was a daily life presentation which you could extend using the Cambridge website visuals. Scoppa, S. Re: [Latinteach] Building a mini Roman house. The Teaching of the Latin Language listserv (latinteach@nxport.com, 13 Aug 2007). --- I've done edible houses many times--kids love the project. One significant caveat: Poll your kids and any other kids who use your classroom beforehand about any food allergies. Cruz, M. Re: [Latinteach] Building a mini Roman house. The Teaching of the Latin Language listserv (latinteach@nxport.com, 14 Aug 2007). --- I do a house model project for which my handouts and links are at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/staff/rbush/docslat1.htm . It's listed as Domus Romanae near the end of the page. Bush, R. Re: [Latinteach] Building a mini Roman house. The Teaching of the Latin Language listserv (latinteach@nxport.com, 22 Aug 2007).

Title: Geography Lessons
Body: Here are some ideas for teaching geography from MoreTPRS users: Put a map of France on the floor. I made mine on a shower curtain, taped to the wall, with a map projected on the curtain. Use a black marker to indicate country borders (France and the surrounding countries), red dots to indicate major cities, blue for water (rivers and surrounding oceans), and green peaks for mountain ranges. Other ideas for getting a map on the floor: outlined on the floor with tape, or simply an old map pulled off its roller. Give commands to an individual student as with normal TPR, but add a location to the command. Example: Thérèse,Viens ici. Va en Italie. danse en Italie. Jérôme, marche dans les Alpes. Franck, va à Paris. Bien. Maintenant, chante. Now ask questions! Qui est à Paris? Qui marche? Où est Jérôme? Que fait Thérèse? My students all had blank paper maps of France that they labeled at their seats, three to five locales per day. Gross, S. [moretprs] A TPR geography lesson. MoreTPRS listserv (moretprs@yahoogroups.com, 14 Aug 2007). --- One year I pushed the desks to the edge of the room, put the students in groups of 3, gave each group a roll of masking tape and an outline map of France and asked them to make the map of France on the carpet. It had to cover the entire open area of the classroom. The next class finished the map, the next class added the bits of borders of the neighboring countries and the next added the rivers and mountain ranges. Then, we did various TPR activities with our map. I left it there for most of the year and would refer to various towns and regions as they came up in reading and lessons. I was amazed at how accurate they managed to make the map. It was much better than if I had done it myself. Volz, R. Re: [moretprs] A TPR geography lesson. Title: New Report: Adult English Language Instruction in the United States
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2007/08/new_report_adul.html The Migration Policy Institute's new report, "Adult English Language Instruction in the United States: Determining Need and Investing Wisely," suggests that in order to get to a level of proficiency necessary for civic integration or to begin post-secondary education, approximately 5.8 million adult lawful permanent residents (LPRs) currently in the United States will need about 277 million hours of English language instruction a year for six years. The report, also suggests that if only half of adult LPRs were to participate in classroom English instruction and 10 percent of instruction could be done outside the classroom, the additional cost of meeting LPRs' English instruction needs would be about $200 million a year for six years, over and above the approximately $1 billion currently spent annually by the federal government and states. The report uses Census-based estimates of the number, educational attainment, and English skills of immigrants currently in the United States, indexes immigrants' needs to existing student performance levels, and provides suggestions on how to strategically expand instructional services to meet these needs. Download the report at http://www.migrationpolicy.org/pubs/NCIIP_English_Instruction073107.pdf .
