Title: New Book: Non-Native Prosody
Body: From http://www.degruyter.de/rs/bookSingle.cfm?id=IS-9783110195248-1&l=D Non-Native Prosody: Phonetic Description and Teaching Practice Ed. by Jürgen Trouvain and Ulrike Gut Publisher: de Gruyter Publisher’s summary: Non-Native Prosody: Phonetic Description and Teaching Practice is a response to the increasing interest in the field of prosody in second language acquisition and teaching. The volume presents an overview of the state of the art in second language prosody learning and teaching and brings together linguistic research on the description and modeling of non-native prosodic structures with L2 teaching methods and practices. The first part comprises descriptions of non-native prosodic structures (including intonation, stress and speech rhythm) as well as methodological considerations of research in second language acquisition written by experts in the field. These overviews of current theoretical models and results from empirical studies are presented in a format accessible to language teachers. In the second part, some of the leading teaching practitioners and developers of phonological learning materials present a variety of methods and exercises in the area of prosody. The accompanying audio examples on a CD-ROM make a useful addition illustrating the descriptions and exercises for various target and source languages. Title: Book: Textual Patterns: Key Words and Corpus Analysis in Language Education
Body: From http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=SCL%2022 Textual Patterns: Key words and corpus analysis in language education by Mike Scott and Christopher Tribble Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company Summary: Textual Patterns introduces corpus resources, tools and analytic frameworks of central relevance to language teachers and teacher educators. Specifically it shows how key word analysis, combined with the systematic study of vocabulary and genre, can form the basis for a corpus informed approach to language teaching. The first part of the book gives the reader a strong grounding in the way in which language teachers can use corpus analysis tools (wordlists, concordances, key words) to describe language patterns in general and text patterns in particular. The second section presents a series of case studies which show how a key word / corpus informed approach to language education can work in practice. The case studies include: General language education (i.e. students in national education systems and those following international examination programmes), foreign languages for academic purposes, literature in language education, business and professional communication, and cultural studies in language education.
