Title: NAEP Validity Studies Reports Now Available Online

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has made a number of interesting NAEP Validity Studies (NVS) Panel reports available online. The reports, released May 19-21, are included in the complete list of NCES

Specific titles of these recently released papers are below.
These reports, some commissioned by the NVS Panel as early as 1997, were written by members of the Panel to report on studies conducted to identify and develop technically sound techniques for use in NAEP assessments. The Panel, whose membership includes nationally recognized psychometricians and experts in NAEP subject areas, advises NCES on the research agenda for maintaining and developing the high technical quality of NAEP assessments.
Discussions between the Panel and NCES have resulted in a rich
collection of reports, which can be easily downloaded for free.

Kindergarten finalist just backed out due to spouse's transfer in
work.
We all know how important it is to build exemplary dual immersion
programs for our state and our field. This school has every systemic
and administrative support system in place. Now all we need is 2

The theme of this year's conference is "Tradition and R)evolution." Keynote speakers will be: Professor Jane Law, Cornell University, Religious Studies, and Professor Peter Gries, University of Colorado at Boulder, Political Science. This conference is specifically for graduate students and would be perfect for a graduate student giving a paper for the first time or a seasoned conference goer.

Andy Vajirasarn
Andy Vajirasarn is a second generation Thai-American who started
studying French from the age of 12 and Japanese from the age of 19. At
UCLA, Vajirasarn studied French and Japanese, obtaining a BA in French. After six years of teaching English, French, and Japanese in Japan, he returned to California to obtain an MA in Teaching Foreign Languages (French and Japanese) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. For the 2001-2002 academic year, he taught and researched in France as an English teaching assistant under the Fulbright/French Government-sponsored Assistant de Langue Vivant program. He is currently living, teaching, and researching in Japan as adjunct faculty at Soka University, Soka Women's College, and Nippon Engineering College of Hachoji. (His current research interest is in SLA with international students in Japan studying at an intensive Japanese language program.)
Short description of the presentation
This paper describes the Japanese L2 (English L1) author's efforts in
designing, piloting, analyzing, and rewriting a Japanese language test
in the French L1 context, using an authentic material (extracts from a
magazine articles).

Hi, All,
In conjunction with the GWATFL/NCLRC Immersion Symposium to be held at
Georgetown University on September 19-20, 2003, the GWATFL newsletter is looking for feature articles on topics of interest both to Immersion and other World Languages teachers. Tips and tricks, assessment ideas, issues and challenges are all topics that we would like to explore in our Fall issue. While we are searching for features of 800 words or less, we will also print short tips and ideas throughout the newsletter, giving due credit to the contributor. The result should be a mosaic of ideas that can
be used in teaching. Some of these may also be featured in the Immersion Symposium program.
