Body:
Digital Games and Language Learning: Edutainment or Real Learning Potential?
June 22-August 17, 2019
Examine your own beliefs about game-based education and learn the facts from the literature. We will discuss instances where games are used as fillers with little to no learning potential and other instances where games allow the design of challenging and rigorous learning activities. This course is an excellent fit for teachers who want to deepen their understanding of game-based education or complete novice gamers (or non-gamers) curious about this approach.

2019 Summer Workshop
Go Real: Creating Relevant and Engaging Learning Experiences for K-12 Chinese Language Learners
August 17
University of Washington, Seattle
Going real in language instruction can fundamentally change the way we teach and dramatically improve learning outcomes for students. This workshop draws content from Asia Society (AS)’s professional development training. AS professional development training provides teachers with practical ways to make learning highly relevant and engaging in Chinese classrooms. The presenters will explore three overarching questions: 1) What is the essence of going real in language instruction? 2) How do we create relevant and engaging learning experiences for Chinese language learners? 3) How do we scaffold to improve students’ performance in communicative tasks? Participants will learn various communicative tasks and effective strategies that can be used for students of different ages and proficiency levels. They will be actively engaged in reviewing examples of classroom activities and the TEQ video lessons the AS has created. They will see how relevant and engaging learning makes a difference in our classrooms.

U.S. Economy Needs More Foreign Language Studies to Stay Competitive, Report Says
by Corey Mitchell
May 21, 2019
Employers in the United States are increasingly reliant on multilingual employees to advance their goals, but many have lost business opportunities because they don't have staff who can communicate in languages other than English, a new report from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages found.
Based on a survey of 1,200 managers and human resources professionals with knowledge of their organization's foreign language needs, the report highlights the critical demand for employees who can communicate in multiple languages.
A third of the survey respondents reported that their needs for foreign language skills were not being met by current employees. Overall, Spanish, Mandarin, French, Japanese, and German were the most in-demand languages, the report found.

Title: Slideshow about Ramadan
Body:
Here is a resource highlighted in the Arabic K-12 Teachers Network newsletter (https://mailchi.mp/qfi/arabic-k-12-bulletin-may-13-2019?e=feb2c9cab6):
Awad Awad (Arabic Faculty at University of North Georgia, Director of Programs at the Alif Institute in Atlanta), Zainab Al-Qasiri (program coordinator at Alif) and Alta Schwartz (Interim Executive Director at Alif) have created and shared this beautiful set of slides describing and explaining traditions, etiquette, and various instances of Ramadan across the Arab world. You can use it with beginning Arabic classes as a cultural enrichment or share it with other classes who don't know any Arabic. Shukran to these educators for this great resource!

Title: Instructional Video for Chinese Teachers: Looking at the Photos of a Past Trip
Body:
In this TEQ video, you can watch the Chinese language teacher Yuan Zhao’s 11th-grade Chinese class at the Mamaroneck High School, New York. This video, "Looking at the Photos of a Past Trip," is an instructional activity to introduce and practice a sentence structure for talking about a past event. The Chinese teacher did this whole activity in context using target language - Chinese. The teacher has demonstrated how to teach Chinese grammar in context without using English. You will see that the students were gaining accuracy in using the new structure for talking about photos.

Title: Jishonari: Online Japanese Learner's Dictionary
Body:
From https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/japanese-learning-resources-april-2019/
Tofugu recently reviewed a new online Japanese dictionary for Japanese learners. Here are some excerpts from the review:
"Jishonari is divided into three panels:
- Japanese reader: Browse the newsfeed from either Aozora Bunko or Reddit, or paste in your own text. Once you're reading, click on any word to bring up definitions and info galore.
- Definitions: Whenever you search for a word or click one in the reader, the definitions appear here. You can get JMDict definitions, as well as related definitions from WordNet.
- Details/synonyms: Example sentences from tatoeba and synonyms live here, as well as stroke order and readings for words with kanji. Search for a verb, and you'll get conjugations too.
"...This is just the tip of Jishonari's iceberg. All over the page, you can click and hover to reveal more information, ever-unfolding into an incredible rabbit-hole experience. There's even a dark mode!
"...Its major strength also happens to be its biggest drawback—because it's so full-featured, it can be hard to navigate and find the information (or the most accurate definition) you're looking for, especially when you're searching for a word you've never seen before."
