Title: Teach Russian Site Solicits Teaching Materials
Body:
We noted the Teach Russian website a few years ago (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/19504). This online resource center for Russian language teachers organizes teacher-contributed materials by level, type, and skill. Recently the site put out a call on the SEELANGS listserv for teaching materials:

We invite you to submit your language teaching materials (for any ages and levels of students) to be published on TeachRussian.org, online resource center for teachers of Russian.

You can share your:

• lesson plans,
• description/handouts of activities and games,
• discussion questions and prompts,
• tests and other assessment materials,
• audio recordings of texts, poems, dialogues etc.,
• grammar charts and handouts, video presentations of language structures;
• teaching tips and short articles on language pedagogy.

As we expand our library of authentic materials, we welcome submissions of songs, poems, movies and cartoons targeting a specific grammatical or lexical topic. If you found a great authentic text, share it with others!

As author, you will get free access to the site growing number of materials. Or you can choose to have your materials published in the free section of the site.

Send your files to info@teachrussian.org.

Title: Five Things Teachers Can Do to Improve Learning for ELLs in the New Year
Body:

From http://www.colorincolorado.org/article/five-things-teachers-can-do-improve-learning-ells-new-year

Kristina Robertson writes, "Teachers are always looking for ways to improve in the classroom; to assist with any of your New Year's resolutions that relate to instruction, I will recommend five specific and measurable actions you can implement to assist English language learners in the classroom. To increase the likelihood of success and continuity, I suggest teachers pick one item and stick to it for the rest of the year. It is better to do one thing consistently and do it well than to try to do all five and possibly lose focus and motivation, becoming a Jack of all trades and master of none. I also suggest teachers employ the "support group" method to ensure success and use the chosen strategy as a topic for a professional learning community. Sharing successes and challenges with colleagues will help you all grow professionally, and more students will benefit academically."

Here are the five recommended strategies:
1. Increase ELL students' English language production and peer interaction.
2. Explicitly teach English language vocabulary and structures.
3. Build on ELLs' Background Knowledge to Increase Comprehension
4. Increase ELL Parent Involvement
5. Increase Writing Opportunities
