World Languages Day is an exciting educational experience for high school students and teachers featuring University of Wisconsin-Madison expertise in languages and cultures from around the world. Like a conference or a college-for-a-day experience, participants at World Languages Day attend four different sessions throughout the day according to an individualized schedule. Sessions include demonstration language lessons, interactive presentations on culture or area studies, and dance or music workshops. Participation is free of charge.
Applications to attend World Languages Day are now being accepted from high school teachers to bring groups of up to 30 students. Apply now!

Title: Teaching Foreign Language Grammar: Inductive or Deductive?

Our InterCom theme for October is grammar: where it matters and where it doesn't. Last march, Joshua Cabral wrote a short post reviewing some research about when deductive (top-down approach in which the grammar rule is presented and students learn to apply it through practice) versus inductive (bottom-up approach in which students create their own hypotheses about grammatical structures based on examples of language use in context) is appropriate in classroom instruction. His conclusion: "Ultimately it would seem that a varied approach is necessary depending on the regularity or irregularity of the focus structure. The important thing to keep in mind is the active engagement of the student in whichever process is used."
