Title | Teaching Foreign Language Grammar: Inductive or Deductive? |
Body | From https://wlclassroom.com/2018/03/08/grammarteaching/ Our InterCom theme for October is grammar: where it matters and where it doesn't. Last march, Joshua Cabral wrote a short post reviewing some research about when deductive (top-down approach in which the grammar rule is presented and students learn to apply it through practice) versus inductive (bottom-up approach in which students create their own hypotheses about grammatical structures based on examples of language use in context) is appropriate in classroom instruction. His conclusion: "Ultimately it would seem that a varied approach is necessary depending on the regularity or irregularity of the focus structure. The important thing to keep in mind is the active engagement of the student in whichever process is used." Read the full blog post at https://wlclassroom.com/2018/03/08/grammarteaching/ |
