Title: Article: Immigrant Students Pushed into GED Programs
Body:
From http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/education/article210951849.html
These immigrants came for a better education. Now, they'll never graduate high school
BY LENA JACKSON, BRENDA MEDINA AND KYRA GURNEY
May 16, 2018
They come fleeing gang violence and repressive regimes. They come after hurricanes and earthquakes. They come in search of work and an education.
But in Miami-Dade County, a place built by the aspirations of newcomers, hundreds of immigrant teens will never graduate from high school.
Instead, they will end up in adult education programs — some of which are taught in Spanish — where they learn little English and where they finish, if they’re lucky, with the high school equivalency diploma known as a GED (General Educational Development). The path to college and a well-paying job, already a struggle for an immigrant, will become even more difficult.

Title: Research Summary: Vocabulary Coverage and TED Talks
Body:
From http://www.eltresearchbites.com
Anthony Schmidt summarizes a 2017 study by U. Nurmukhamedov on the lexical coverage of TED Talks and how much vocabulary a person needs to know in order to understand their content. His takeaway: "TED Talks offer a powerful language learning tool and have a number of benefits. There are many ways to use TED Talks for intensive and extensive language learning, but, as this study indicates, having a large vocabulary is essential if learners are going to get any use out of these talks. I would recommend using short excerpts and scaffolding instruction to learn important vocabulary (and pronunciation) before moving on to other listening- and meaning-based activities."
