Title: Call for Proposals: Symposium on Second Language Writing 2018
Body:

From http://pmatsuda.net/proposals/openconf.php

Symposium on Second Language Writing 2018
University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University
Vancouver, Canada
August 2-4, 2018

The 2018 Symposium on Second Language Writing seeks proposals for presentations that address various topics within the field of L2 writing.

Any topic related to second language writing theory, research, teaching or program administration is welcome. The organizers especially encourage proposals that seek to challenge the status quo in the field by introducing new topics as well as new theoretical and methodological approaches. As with all previous Symposium iterations, we are interested in L2 writing issues in any second or foreign language for any age groups in personal, academic, professional and civic contexts

Given the theme of “Multilingualism and Second Language Writing,” the organizers particularly encourage proposals that address issues related multilingualism, bilingualism, and related concepts involving the uses and influences of multiple languages on L2 writing.

Proposals must be received by December 15, 2017.

Title: Language Teacher Symposium: Social Justice in the Language Classroom: A New Lens on Learning
Body:

From http://cercll.arizona.edu/lates-language-teacher-symposium

Our sister Language Resource Center, the Center for Educational Resources in Culture Language and Literacy, is hosting its biannual day-long symposium for K-12 language teachers.

Social Justice in the Language Classroom: A New Lens on Learning
Presented by Pamela M. Wesely (University of Iowa)
November 4, 2017
University of Arizona

Workshop description: In this workshop, the participants will start by examining the principles of social justice education, looking specifically at how those principles connect with the guidelines and standards in language teaching. The participants will also reflect on and discuss their own interests and strengths in becoming language educators for social justice as we review those concepts. We will proceed through activities and discussions designed to help the participants to plan and adapt curriculum, classroom activities, and assessments that help students to understand and enact principles of social justice while still developing their language proficiency. We will also address how teachers can address unplanned and challenging moments that arise in the classroom in a way that respects students and encourages critical thinking.

Title: Can Paraprofessionals Help Solve the Bilingual Teacher Shortage?

Can Paraprofessionals Help Solve the Bilingual Teacher Shortage?
by Kaylan Connally, Amaya Garcia, Shayna Cook and Conor P. Williams
October 9, 2017

Paraprofessionals are twice as likely to speak a language other than English at home than their teacher counterparts, and many bring instructional knowledge and clear, accessible pathways for gaining teacher certification in the U.S. but often face many hurdles along the way. Multilingual paraprofessionals represent a largely untapped pool of potential teacher talent—largely because policies have made it difficult for them to advance to lead teacher. Some research already exists on multilingual paraprofessionals and the barriers that they encounter when applying to teach.

This article is excerpted from the report Teacher Talent Untapped: Multilingual Paraprofessionals Speak about the Barriers to Entering the Profession, published by New America. Access the January 2017 report at https://www.newamerica.org/education-policy/policy-papers/teacher-talent-untapped/
