Title: Assessment in Online Language Courses

The National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) in collaboration with the North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is offering a professional development (PD) series titled “Assessment in Online Language Courses” for online language instructors nationwide. The purpose of this series is to introduce instructors to the concepts, principles, and best practices for designing and conducting assessments in online language courses.

The series consists of five 2-hour webinar sessions covering ten topics. Sessions will take place every Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) starting on September 27 and ending on October 25, 2017. Participants who successfully complete the series by attending webinar sessions and completing associated tasks will earn a digital badge from the NFLRC and may be eligible to earn a Continuing Education Unit (CEU) towards maintaining their professional qualifications. (Teachers from NCVPS are automatically eligible; other educators will need to put the NFLRC in contact with the awarding supervisor.)

The University of Colorado Boulder will be offering three fall courses as part of its Certificate in Language Teaching with Technology program.

LGTC 5035: Teaching Languages Online
September 16 to November 11, 2017 
This course explores the topic of teaching and learning languages online with an emphasis on best practices, course design, assessment, and the use of synchronous and asynchronous tools. You will learn to plan, deliver, teach, and assess an online unit through a learning management systems and various Web 2.0 tools. Your work will culminate with the creation of a sample course plan and sample module for a prospective online language course. This course is good fit for teachers who wish to learn to teach fully online or to create online materials to supplement their face-to-face courses. 

LGTC 5045: Telecollaboration Exchange for Language Learning
September 23 to November 4, 2017
The goal of this course is to allow you to work on your own language proficiency. You will meet twice a week for 30 minutes with a native or near native speaker of the language you teach via video conferencing. You will conduct 10 sessions total. Each week, you will listen back to your sessions and write short reflections as well as read and discuss short articles related to the challenges of developing and maintaining oral proficiency with your instructor and classmates. 

LGTC 5030: Tools in Practice
October 21 to December 16 
This course will introduce you to major technology themes. You will explore the educational potential of the following themes through scholarly readings and lesson planning: the ACTFL World Readiness Standards and the SAMR Model; the flipped classroom; using authentic web-based resources; Developing Intercultural Competence (Cultura); Digital Storytelling (with Adobe Spark); Digital Games and Gamification; Social Media Mediated Language Learning; Technology & Assessment. You will develop and implement a small scale technology integration project.

Title: New Delaware Certificate of Multiliteracy Recognizes Advanced Language Skills

Delaware has developed a new Certificate of Multiliteracy to honor and recognize students with high levels of language proficiency in addition to English, Secretary of Education Susan Bunting announced today.

The certificate applauds students for attaining high levels of language proficiency in multiple languages and also values native language proficiency for the 11,000 English learners in Delaware.

Students can use the certificate as a credential to help differentiate them as applicants for jobs, college entrance or the military.
