FROM CRISIS MANAGEMENT TO INNOVATION
Reimagining the Role of World Languages in the 21st Century
October 6-7, 2017
Hope College, Michigan

In an era of changing demographics, pragmatism, and ever-tightening budgets, higher education is changing rapidly. If headlines are any indication, world language programs are often the first to be eliminated when cuts must be made.

What if language departments could be part of the solution in a more positive and proactive way? What if world languages played a leadership role in reshaping the 21st-century academy?

Originally started at Simpson College in 2015, this conference offers an opportunity for teams of language educators and college administrators to explore this question in depth. The organizers invite college faculty and administrators (as individuals or, more effectively, in teams) seeking innovative solutions to the problems facing language programs in higher education.

Dickinson Latin Workshop
Saturday, October 21, 2017
Creating a Digital Commentary for Teaching
Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania

Do you write your own notes on Latin texts for your students? Are you frustrated with the limitations of Microsoft Word when it comes to parallel display of text, notes, and vocabulary? Now you can create attractive, usable reading texts online with vocabulary lists and notes simultaneously displayed, and the ability to include hyperlinks and add audio-visual material. This workshop will demonstrate and provide practice with a new plugin for the WordPress CMS that mimics the easy-to-read format of Dickinson College Commentaries. In addition, participants will see demonstrations of and practice using a variety of online tools that are helpful in the creation and annotation of reading texts: The Bridge for vocabulary list creation; DCC core vocabulary; Pleiades for geography; digitized grammars and reference works for simplifying annotations; Johan Winge’s macronizer; and others.

This workshop will be of interest primarily to Latin teachers, but others are more than welcome to attend. The workshop is free of charge, but to order materials and food the organizers need to have an accurate count of attendees. Please pre-register by October 9.

Title: Webinar: Building Bridges to Success
Body:

New research from the Center for Promise, the research arm of America’s Promise Alliance, finds that schools and educators who want to boost the prospects for English-language learners should take stock of what is happening in their lives both inside and outside the classroom. Drawing on student data and interviews with English-learners, the researchers explored why the students may struggle to achieve English proficiency and identified steps that educators can take to knock down barriers ELLs encounter on the road to earning a diploma. Join us for a conversation with researchers and educators to explore how to build bridges, not barriers, to success for English-learners.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) today announced a three-year partnership with First Nations Development Institute to foster the revitalization of Native American languages through language-immersion education programs within tribal communities.

Two million one hundred thousand dollars in funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities will be matched dollar for dollar by First Nations Development Institute to support curriculum development, technology access, and recruitment and training of teachers for twelve immersive Native-language programs a year. Language programs will be designed with input from an advisory committee of Native-language immersion practitioners and members of Native communities to incorporate Native cultural content and culturally appropriate ways of teaching and learning.

Title: Portuguese through an Independent Lens

From https://www.languagemagazine.com/2017/08/portuguese-independent-lens/

Portuguese through an Independent Lens
by Kristal Bivona
August 7, 2017

Portuguese instruction faces some challenges that are by no means unique to Portuguese but also affect the instruction of other imperialist languages, such as English, Spanish, and French. One such challenge is the underrepresentation of cultures and peoples who identify as indigenous and African. Of course, this gross underrepresentation is not limited to language-teaching materials, nor is it occurring in a vacuum within the field of education—it is pandemic in cultural production from formerly imperial or colonized places everywhere, as evident, for example, in the lack of cultural and racial diversity in film and television. As a result, language teachers often present a version of the target culture that misrepresents the reality of the places about which they are teaching. In the case of Portuguese, which faces a dearth of published teaching materials compared to other imperialist languages, textbooks present a whitened Brazil, only mentioning Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous culture and history as side notes.

As instructors, if we want our students to have a deeper engagement with underrepresented groups in the target culture, we need to get creative. The program at the Claremont Consortium is exemplary in building in opportunities for the students to practice Portuguese outside of the classroom and to learn about Afro-Brazilian culture, research, and experiences.
