Icelanders Seek to Keep Their Language Alive and Out of ‘the Latin Bin’
April 22, 2017

The people of Iceland, a rugged North Atlantic island settled by Norsemen about 1,100 years ago, have a unique dialect of Old Norse that has adapted to life at the edge of the Arctic.

Hundslappadrifa, for example, means “heavy snowfall with large flakes occurring in calm wind.”

But the revered Icelandic language, seen by many as a source of identity and pride, is being undermined by the widespread use of English, both in the tourism industry and in the voice-controlled artificial intelligence devices coming into vogue.

Linguistics experts, studying the future of a language spoken by fewer than 400,000 people in an increasingly globalized world, wonder if this is the beginning of the end for the Icelandic tongue.

Title: Virtual Conference: Teaching Leaders and Leadership Through the Classics
Body:

From https://teachingleadershipthruclassics.wordpress.com/

Teaching Leaders and Leadership Through Classics
A Virtual Conference | May 8-22 2017

This conference explores how the study of classical antiquity has been, can be, and should be used as a platform for leadership education in the 21st century.

The fifteen pre-recorded talks that make up this conference are divided into panels of 3-5 presentations, organized around these four questions:

•    What are the most effective ways to teach leadership and leaders in a physical classroom or online space?
•    How can Classics be used to teach leaders outside of the classroom, in arenas such as business and politics?
•    What can we do to get the most out of the study (and therefore the teaching) of ancient leadership?
•    What are the best (and worst) ways to draw parallels between ancient and modern leaders?

In addition to the pre-recorded talks, each panel will have an interactive Q&A forum, open only to registered conference participants, where they can connect with each other and delve deeper into the issues raised by the talks. There will also be a separate general conference forum, allowing participants to discuss ideas that don’t neatly fit into one of the four panels. The Q&A forums will be open and live May 8-22, 2017, and, along with the talks and other supplementary materials, will be archived for future site visitors after the conference has closed.
