Your Mother-in-Law Loves You and Other Proverbs and Expressions from Syria
By Rebecca Joubin
Published by Ibex Publishers

Your Mother-in-Law Loves You is a bilingual collection of more than 600 proverbs and expressions from Syria. It is a useful tool for students of Syrian-Arabic, Modern Arabic as well as those interested in the rich culture of the country.

For about ten years, Rebecca Joubin, assistant professor of Arab studies at Davidson College, has travelled to and conducted research in Syria. Noticing the use of proverbs and expressions as a signature of Syrian culture and identity, she began writing down the phrases she heard in casual conversation and in the local media.

The expressions are presented here in Syrian-Arabic, in modern standard Arabic and, for those not familiar with the language, in English translation. And when necessary, they are explained. Her bilingual collection of more than 600 proverbs is ideal for all students of Arabic as well as those interested in the rich culture of Syria. The sayings have been divided by topic such as the body, food, animals, colors, homeland, work and experience.

In this collection we see the many unique values and attributes of Syrian culture. We observe kindness, hospitality, generosity, forgiveness, and humility. More importantly, in addition to observing the singularities of Syrian culture, we learn about the universalities of human nature.

Title: Article: Flipping the Classroom at the Mandarin Language and Cultural Center

Simple Machine: Flipping the Classroom Propels Learning
by Heather Clydesdale

In flipped learning, students acquaint themselves with new content and practice skills ahead of class via activities developed by their teacher and posted online. When class convenes, time that once was consumed explaining fresh concepts can instead be used engaging in project-based activities. Wenping Chen, a Chinese teacher and teacher-educator, is a convert to the format, and so are her students. "The first year, I did not believe they [students] would do the preview," she says. "They did. Some prefer it to a group setting. It does help me a lot."

Chen's endeavors are part of a larger initiative at her school, the Mandarin Language and Cultural Center (MLCC) in San Jose, California. Over the past three years, MLCC educators have made a concerted effort to flip their classrooms using three components: asynchronous online sessions, synchronous online sessions, and classroom sessions. "Kids can learn any time and at their own pace," says MLCC principal, Jane Chen, describing asynchronous learning, where students log on and learn at their leisure.

Title: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" in Japanese
Body:

From http://japanese.about.com

Namiko Abe of About.com writes, "As you might already know, the New Year (shogatsu) is the biggest and the most important celebration in Japan. Christmas is not even a national holiday, though December 23rd is, because of the Emperor's birthday. However, the Japanese love to celebrate festivals, and have adopted many Western customs including Christmas. The Japanese celebrate Christmas in a "Japanese way"...

"There are many Christmas songs translated into Japanese. Here is the Japanese version of 'Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer (Akahana no tonakai)'": http://japanese.about.com/od/japanesecultur1/fl/Lets-Sing-the-Rudolph-Song-in-Japanese.htm?nl=1
