Course Dates: Nov. 5 – Dec. 9, 2014
This online course provides a theoretical and practical foundation for culturally responsive teaching of English language learners in the secondary school setting. We will examine immigrant teenagers and their experience of schooling; the demographic and diversity profile of Massachusetts districts; cross-cultural communication and its implications for teaching and learning; and effective strategies for secondary schools to engage immigrant and refugee families. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your own teaching practice, apply course skills and strategies, and receive feedback from peers and instructor.
This course has been pre-qualified by the MA DESE to meet licensure requirements for renewal or extension of educators' Sheltered English Immersion (SEI/RETELL) Endorsement.
Especially for educators of grades 6-12.

Promoting Oral Language Skills for English Learners: An Interactive Workshop

This hands-on workshop provides participants with tools to create and implement instructional activities that foster oral language development for English learners of all ages and proficiency levels. Participants will practice evidence-based strategies that promote peer-to-peer and teacher-to-student interaction in different content areas and learn how to implement instructional scaffolds to ensure total participation during these tasks. Workshop activities include mini-lectures, demonstrations, guided lesson design, viewing of authentic classroom video, discussion, and reflection. Participants will receive copies of CAL's Seven Principles for Effective Instruction for English Learners.

Title: Minority Scholarship in Classics and Classical Archaeology

The Committee on Minority Scholarships of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) invites applications from minority undergraduate students for a scholarship to be awarded for Summer 2015. The purpose of the scholarship is to further an undergraduate's preparation for graduate work in classics or classical archaeology. Eligible proposals might include (but are not limited to) participation in classical summer programs or field schools in Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc., or language training at institutions in the U.S, Canada, or Europe. The maximum amount of the award will be $4,000.
The receipt deadline for applications is December 15, 2014.
