Title: Activity Idea: Talking Cards
Body: From http://elmundodebirch.wordpress.com Here is a flexible activity recently posted on the El Mundo de Birch blog: “The activity is called Talking Cards, and you need to have a deck of cards for every group of students. … Each student will have the Talking Card sheet (you can see what the sheet looks like by going to the blog post). …[T]here is a category for each suit in the deck of cards, and the categories could certainly be changed to reflect any vocabulary or grammar that you may be working on at the moment. … Students will draw a card and look at their worksheet to see what they should say based on the card drawn. … If the student successfully performs the task on the sheet for the card he has drawn, he will score those points. The winner would be the student who has accumulated the most points at the end of a period of time. …” Read a full description of the activity and see the example Talking Card sheet for Spanish at http://elmundodebirch.wordpress.com/2012/04/06/talking-cards-7

Title: Model United Nations Summer Institute for High School Students
Body: The UCLA International Institute will be offering a Model United Nations Summer Institute, a week-long intensive program for high school students who are interested in international diplomacy and foreign affairs. This will take place from June 24 - June 30, 2012. During the Summer Institute, high school students will take on the role of diplomat, engage in independent research, and debate a country’s position on one of the many committees of the United Nations. This week-long program is a perfect way for high school students to not only enhance their public speaking skills and learn to work cooperatively to accomplish substantive goals that benefit the world, but an excellent opportunity to learn about the world, its history, its peoples, and the way its governments work together in a very realistic simulation. Debating in committees, students cover topics such as demilitarization of conflict regions like Kashmir, HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, international human trafficking in Southeast Asia, loss of bio diversity through climate change, and even historical crises such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Napoleonic Wars. Students participating in the Model United Nations Summer Institute will work closely with current members of the MUN at UCLA Team, one of the top 10 most comprehensive MUN collegiate programs in the country, including its Executive Board Members. In addition, the Model United Nations Summer Institute provides high school students with the following: • College Credit: Students who successfully complete the program will receive 2 units of Pass/No Pass University of California credit. • One Week In-Residence Program: Due to the rigorous and intense nature of the program, the residential plan, which includes housing, a meal plan, a schedule of activities, and supervision, is mandatory for all students. • Scholarship Opportunities: The UCLA International Institute is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities for students participating in the Model United Nations Summer Institute. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available to qualified California high school students for summer study at UCLA. More information on the Model United Nations Summer Institute, as well as information on registering for the program can be found at http://www.summer.ucla.edu/institutes/Mun/overview.htm Leicester, E. Title: Examples of Formative Assessment
Body: From http://wvde.state.wv.us/teach21/ExamplesofFormativeAssessment.html When incorporated into classroom practice, the formative assessment process provides information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are still happening. The process serves as practice for the student and a check for understanding during the learning process. The formative assessment process guides teachers in making decisions about future instruction. Here are a few examples that may be used in the classroom during the formative assessment process to collect evidence of student learning. http://wvde.state.wv.us/teach21/ExamplesofFormativeAssessment.html
