Title: Guardian Teacher Network Features Global Wall Planners
Body: From http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2012/jan/02/teaching-resources-wall-planners The Guardian Teacher Network has a variety of wall planners that will ensure you don't miss any teaching opportunities over the coming months: The Global Wall Planner is a colorful chart that lists a wealth of international days and weeks between now and the summer holidays. It is ideal for planning lessons, assemblies or whole-school activities with a global citizenship theme. Some of the dates covered include World Braille Day (4 January), Fairtrade Fortnight (27 February-11 March) and World Health Day (7 April). The wall planner can be used in conjunction with an online calendar that has links to learning and teaching resources for each global event. The Chembakolli wall planner has beautiful pictures and illustrations of the Adivasi people, a tribal group who live in the south Indian village of Chembakolli. Produced by the charity Action Aid, the resource aims to help teachers and pupils keep track of important dates in the UK and India. It also highlights the struggle of the Adivasi to regain their land from government authorities and non-tribal people seeking opportunities for national park land, timber, and tea and coffee plantations. Resources to support the wall planner include slideshows and written information about life in and around Chembakolli. The 2011/12 year planner features details of awareness days, religious festivals, public holidays and historical events to help you plan topical activities throughout the year. It is one of several resources produced by www.primaryclass.co.uk that are free to download for use in the classroom. For more information to these resources and links to them, visit http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2012/jan/02/teaching-resources-wall-planners

Title: Partners in Conversation: Online Language Conversation Exchange
Body: Partners in Conversation is a new website that pairs students together in video or text chats to practice speaking foreign languages with each other. Here is a message from the site’s creators: “Conversation practice is a vital aspect of learning a foreign language. However, it’s often difficult to find suitable conversation partners. The solution: Partners in Conversation, a free website that pairs language students together for video or text chatting in real-time. “Students are automatically matched with conversation partners, who can either be students from around the world or selected from within defined groups, like a single classroom. Alternatively, students can keep a “buddy list” of favorite conversation partners for scheduled chats. Partners in Conversation requires no special software; everything takes place through the integrated website. “Partners in Conversation allows instructors to move conversation practice out of the classroom, saving valuable class time. Private grouping allows for conversation practice among classmates in a teacher-controlled environment. More possibilities exist, such as a virtual meet ‘n greet between two classes, which might be across the hall — or around the world from one another. “We’re looking for language learning professionals who are interested in trying out Partners in Conversation with their students. If you’d like to talk more about Partners in Conversation, please get in touch by emailing us at info at partnersinconversation dot com. We’re Brett Markowitz and Mark Neuburger, two 2010 Cornell University graduates who work on cool stuff that we'd like to use ourselves.” Horn, E. FW: Partners in Conversation. Title: Call for Papers: Mobile Language Learning
Body: Call for Papers: Mobile Language Learning Special Issue Editors: Glenn Stockwell & Susana Sotillo There has been increased interest in portable technologies which allow learners to access tools for learning languages in virtually any time or place that suits them. The quickly developing functionalities of mobile phones, MP3 players, laptop and tablet computers, and other hand-held devices with touch screen technology mean that the range of possibilities for language learning has greatly diversified. Godwin-Jones (2011), for example, points out that iPhone and Android phones have ushered in a phenomenal expansion in the development of Apps for just about every topic under the sun, and educators have been exploring the value of Apps for learning specific skills (e.g., math, geometry) and language since 2009. The interest in such mobile technologies for learning languages has also been reflected in recent literature, with the appearance of studies using mobile technologies, such as podcasts (e.g., Rosell-Aguilar, 2006), short message service (SMS) (e.g., Levy & Kennedy, 2008; Sotillo, 2010; Thurlow, 2003, 2009), and mobile phones (Stockwell, 2010), to name a few. This special issue of Language Learning & Technology seeks to provide a variety of perspectives on learning through mobile technologies, with a particular focus on corpus-based or empirical studies investigating how the use of these technologies affect and are affected by the language learning environment, or discussions of theoretical issues associated with learning through mobile technologies. Please consult the LLT Website for general guidelines on submission (http://llt.msu.edu/contrib.html ) and research (http://llt.msu.edu/resguide.html ) and note that articles containing only descriptions of software or pedagogical procedures without presenting in-depth empirical data and analysis on language learning processes or outcomes will not be considered. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Practical issues of mobile language learning * Theories applicable to mobile language learning * Autonomy and/or self-directed learning through mobile technologies * Teacher education for mobile language learning * Development of Apps and software for mobile language learning * Using mobile technologies for specialized language learning * Teaching second language pragmatics through mobile technologies Please send letter of intent and 250-word abstract by February 1, 2012, to llted at Hawaii dot edu. Publication timeline: * February 1, 2012: Submission deadline for abstracts * February 15, 2011: Invitation to authors to submit a manuscript * July 1, 2012: Submission deadline for manuscripts * October 1, 2013: Publication of special issue National Foreign Language Resource Center.
