Title: Preliminary Announcement: Director of Language Center

PENDING APPROVAL. The University of Cyprus (UCY) is looking to fill the upcoming post of Director of the Language Center. The Language Center will be part of a bigger Learning Resource Center, also hosting the UCY Library and Information Technology/Computer Center, on the newly created UCY Campus, expected to open in 2007. We expect to make the appointment some time during the next academic year.
The post of director will be on the salary scale of Associate Professor, in fact that is the rank at which s/he is going to be hired (i.e. as an academic director with further positions for manager and assistant). It will be expected of the director to work well and coordinate with the directors of IT/Computer Science and the library as well as the respective philologies (Department of English Studies, Department of French and Modern Languages, Department of Turkish Studies).
The initial tasks of the director of the Language Center will be
supervision in the construction and design of the Language Center at all planning stages, hiring new and approved staff, and coordinating the Language Center inside out. Since there currently is no language center at UCY, this includes all issues of employment, contracts, and so on. Reimbursement will come with full social security, health insurance, and other benefits, including travel budget.

THE OPPORTUNITY: The Phoenix-Talent School District has an opening for the position of Principal of Phoenix Elementary School. Phoenix Elementary provides quality education to approximately 450 students in grades K-5. This school has strong community and parental support and the District is looking for a dynamic leader. A strong core of dedicated teachers at Phoenix Elementary provides students with a well-balanced education. The school offers innovative programs and instruction for all students. Program areas include:
1) Two-Way Immersion Program
2) Positive Behavior Education
3) Technology in the Classroom
4) Reading is FUNdemental (RIF)
DESIRABLE QUALITIES: To further the development of excellence in education, the district is seeking a person who exhibits the following qualities:
1) Supportive of staff and students
2) Effective communication skills with students, staff, parents and
community
3) Familiar with state content and performance standards
4) Commitment to team building and collaborative development of educational programs
5) Bilingual
6) Knowledge of second language acquisition
7) Familiarity with Hispanic culture
QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Valid Oregon Administrative license
2) Demonstrated competency and ability in curriculum development and the overall improvement of instruction
3) Demonstrated competency in the areas of staff recruitment and selection, budget preparation and administration, facility management, student management and public relations
4) Three years administrative experience is preferred. Previous experience as an elementary principal is desirable, but not mandatory
5) A commitment to team management

En 1999 la Comisión para el Esclarecimiento Histórico hizo público el informe Guatemala, memoria del silencio; en el cual se presenta la historia de acontecido durante más de tres décadas de guerra interna en Guatemala. Por su extensión, doce tomos, la difusión del informe ha quedado reducida a círculos académicos y políticos especializados. Con el propósito de contribuir a una difusión más amplia de los aspectos medulares del informe, F&G Editores publica este volumen que incluye los capítulos IV y V del Informe, Conclusiones y Recomendaciones.
En el prólogo a esta edición el Dr. Edelberto Torres-Rivas, señala que: La publicación de las Conclusiones y Recomendaciones de la Comisión de Esclarecimiento Histórico es una ofensiva contra el silencio cómplice que practica la sociedad guatemalteca, es un intento de detener esa oscura estrategia de los victimarios que enfatizando las virtudes del olvido no quieren que los guatemaltecos asumamos nuestra historia. Publicitar la verdad es oportuno porque recuerda los inenarrables actos de barbarie que los militares cometieron contra la nación guatemalteca, especialmente en su sector humano más vulnerable, la población indígena.

Readers Needed for the National Professional Development Competitive
Review Process
OELA is interested in recruiting readers for the National Professional
Development competitive review process, scheduled for the week of April 19th, 2004. The National Professional Development Program provides funding for IHEs, in consortia with LEA(s) or SEA(s), to prepare teachers and other educational personnel to serve English language learners.
The NPD application review process will be conducted off-site, which
means applications are mailed to readers who review them at their choice of location, and communicate with OELA and their panel members
electronically.
The selective factor for NPD readers is:
* Experience administering, teaching in, or evaluating professional development programs for educational personnel preparing to serve English language learners.
In order to serve as a reader for this year's review process,
individuals must not have submitted an application, or represent an
institution that has submitted an application, for the FY 2004 NPD
review process.
Readers receive an honorarium of $125 per day. If you are interested in being considered for selection as a reader for the National Professional development program, either for this year, or for future years, please send a resume to:

SKY Journal of Linguistics, the annual publication of the Linguistic Association of Finland (SKY), is looking for contributors. SKY JoL welcomes unpublished original works from authors of all nationalities and theoretical persuasions. Every manuscript is reviewed by at least two anonymous referees. In addition to papers on any linguistic topic, SKY JoL publishes short 'squibs' (3-5 pages) and book reviews. The languages of publication are
English, French and German.
If you would like to review a book for SKY JoL, contact one of the editors, who will then request a review copy from the publisher.
The deadline for initial submissions is the end of May each year. Provided that a manuscript is accepted for publication without major revisions, it will in the normal course of events appear in January the next year.
