Title: Space Still Available for Free Teacher Workshops!
Body: The Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative is offering 14 free workshops for teachers this summer. Space is limited, but there is still time to attend the following workshops. Teachers and administrators from across the country will share strategies that have proven effective in their own classrooms and schools. Denver Summer Workshop (June 5-6) The Denver Teacher-to-Teacher workshop will offer sessions for teachers of grades 6-12 in all subject areas. The workshop will be held at the Colorado Convention Center. St. Paul Summer Workshop (June 20-21) The St. Paul workshop will offer sessions for teachers of grades K-8 in all subject areas. The workshop will be held at the Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront. Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park Workshop with the National Park Service (June 22-23) Sessions will be offered for K-8 teachers of math and history at the birthplace and home of aviation. Tours of the Wright Brother's bicycle and print shop, and the Huffman Prairie Field will be offered. Pittsburgh Summer Workshop (July 17-18) Sessions for teachers of grades 6-12 in all content areas will be offered at the Pittsburgh Summer Workshop. The workshop will be held at the Hilton Pittsburgh. Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Workshop with the National Park Service, Billings, MT (July 20-21) Sessions will be offered for K-12 teachers of science and history. Re-enactors and historians will relive the journey of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The workshop will be held at Montana State University. Foreign Language Workshops with a Special Emphasis on Mandarin Chinese, Los Angeles (July 31-August 1); Washington, DC (August 3-4) Sessions will be offered on classroom strategies for foreign language instruction, with special sessions focusing on the instruction of Mandarin Chinese. Program design and implementation will also be addressed. These workshops are appropriate for all K-12 foreign language teachers and coordinators, as well as schools and school districts interested in offering Chinese programs. Edison National Historic Site with the National Park Service, West Orange, NJ (August 7-8) Sessions will be offered for science teachers of grades 6-12. Title: Spanish-Speaking Capitals Songs
Body: Recently several teachers posted to the FLTEACH listserv about how much their students enjoyed songs which teach the names of the capitals of Spanish-speaking countries. One such song is available at http://www.color-connection.com/Catalog/MainCatalog.htm ; read on for information about another. ---- My students loved this song too. Sometimes at the end of class I would say one of the capitals at random and students would shout out the country. I did this with the freshmen. I had teachers who then got these students as seniors and told me they were amazed that these students still retained the capitals and respective countries in their heads after three years. The power of songs/music/rhythm is nothing short of amazing. May, J. Body: I'll share a really simple/fun idea that worked well for DOPs. I had each student select 5 items from a list of vocab words (all nouns). They then had to find other students who wrote down the same items on their lists by asking "?Tienes _____?" The response would be Si, lo/la/los/las tengo or No, no ___ tengo... Body: Penguin Graded Readers have adult titles such as Gladiator and Braveheart. You might want to have a look at the novels of John Grisham -- The Firm, The Client, for example. They have exciting plots, but incredibly simple language. In our program the low intermediate students read the Penguin readers, the high-intermediate students read Grisham at the beginning of their semester. Snoke, J. Re: Graded readers for adults. It's very high-interest, high quality earth/physical science, history/archaeology, engineering/architecture magazine. The photos are spectacular, the articles often have glossed vocabulary, and it is very multi-national in scope. The word "kids" on the cover is written very small and the topic of that magazine issue, for example "Pyramids" takes the focus, so your adult learners will hopefully not be offended by the intended audience. Its on-line readability list shows that the articles are at U.S. 3rd-6th grade basal reading level.
