A 'One-Size-Fits-All' Approach to English-Learner Education Won't Work. Here's Why

While English-language learners generally lag behind their peers in academic achievement, lumping the students into one group can limit schools' ability to identify their individual strengths and struggles.
Whether they're a newcomer to the United States, a longterm ELL struggling with academic English, or a student who is somewhere in-between, English-learners have diverse academic and linguistic needs—and a new study argues that there are vast differences in what they need and how they perform in school.
Using longitudinal data from a large, urban California school district, the research found that newcomer English-learners and reclassified English-learners take just as many, if not more, advanced academic courses than their native English-speaking peers.
Conversely, the data reveals, longer-term English-learners take fewer advanced academic courses.

At home, fifth-grader Aileen Shao usually speaks Mandarin with her family. So when she heads to the hallways of P.S. 1 in Brooklyn for summer school, she helps her classmates connect to one another.
...Shao is among the roughly 7,500 New York City children who attended free summer programs that are designed to help multilingual students — children who are learning English as a new language — build skills in core subjects, such as math, while developing their language skills. Depending on the program, there’s also lighter summer fare, such as field trips and cooking classes.
Students can lose their grasp of a new language over the summer because they might only be speaking it in a limited capacity, if at all, educators say. There’s not a lot of research around summer learning loss among English language learners, but one 2012 study found that students from non-English speaking homes experienced a bigger loss of English vocabulary while school was out compared to students from homes where English is spoken.

In this language-rich game, the teacher has a collection of true facts about one student, but four students are seated in front of the class claiming that these facts are true about them. Title: Crosstalk Method for Language Exchanges
