Standard-Based Approaches to Teaching Polish Language

Organized by: Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago
Location: Chicago, IL (Specific location, TBA)
This workshop will bring together instructors to share their practices and materials, as they relate to teaching Polish. The focus of this workshop will be on standard-based approaches to teaching language, especially alongside ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language, www.actfl.org) proficiency and world-readiness standards. This workshop will serve as a forum for exchange of the most successful topics, projects, and syllabi from the most recent years of teaching, across participants’ institutions.
The workshop will consist of individual or group presentations, 20 minutes in length.
There will be one panel dedicated especially to K-12 Polish language teaching, including Saturday Schools, and the committee asks that papers submitted for this panel be noted as such in their proposal.
We invite all Polish language instructors to apply to present at the workshop, however, presenting is not a requirement, as we also encourage attendance in order to learn from practices of other instructors.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Topics can include but are not limited to the following:
-Curriculum design, alongside ACTFL Standards, across all levels of instruction
-Assessment practices and assessment design
-Reverse design and curricular transformations
-Advantages and limitations of using authentic, adapted, or original materials
-Effective search for materials and criteria for their usefulness
-Material use in developing cultural awareness
-Preparing students to work with authentic materials
-Using technology in adapting materials (adaptation, supplementation, and design)
-Creative ways to use contemporary materials for teaching Polish
-Designing activities for students on all levels of language proficiency
We invite all attendees to bring and share the activities and exercises based on materials they have developed and successfully use in their classroom.

- a presentation abstract (200-250 words)
- a short biographical sketch (maximum 100 words) including a brief description of your research and/or teaching interests

Title: Call for Proposals: German Studies Association 2019 Conference

The German Studies Association will hold its 43rd Annual Conference from 3 to 6 October 2019 at the Hilton Portland Downtown in Portland, Oregon.
The Program Committee cordially invites proposals on any aspect of German, Austrian, or Swiss studies, including (but not limited to) history, Germanistik, film, art history, political science, anthropology, musicology, religious studies, sociology, and cultural studies.
Proposals for entire sessions, for interdisciplinary presentations, and for series of panels are strongly encouraged (though the organizers discourage thematic series of more than four panels). Individual paper proposals are also welcome. The call for seminar proposals has been distributed separately at https://www.thegsa.org/blog/call-seminar-proposals-2019.
Please see the conference page for information about the submission process for "traditional" papers, sessions, and roundtables, which will open on 5 January 2019. The deadline for proposals is 15 February 2019.

India's Century of Change: Diversity, Democracy and Social Dynamics
Online Course
January 23-February 26, 2019
India's multifold diversity lies at the core of the challenges and opportunities it faces in the political, economic, and social realms. This fully online course will provide educators with ways to approach this daunting diversity and to use it as a lens to examine India’s political development from the movement for independence and Partition to the recent election victory of Narendra Modi. Participants in the course will also examine the challenges India has faced as it has attempted to develop its economy over the last 60 years, paying particular attention to urbanization, the wealth gap, and environmental issues. Social issues from gender to education and a look at differing perspectives on Bollywood will round out the course in the final week. A rich collection of readings, maps, photographs, documents, video, literature, and art will inform our explorations throughout the course.
Open to all K-12 educators.

Deaf children with cochlear implants still can’t hear as well as hearing individuals, Hauser says. On average, deaf children with cochlear implants demonstrated lower receptive and expressive vocabulary knowledge than children with full hearing, according to a 2016 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. While some develop strong hearing skills and grow comfortable with spoken language, others don’t. By the time this is discovered, children may have been deprived of language in the critical acquisition period, or the first few years of life.

2019 has been declared the International Year of Indigenous Languages by UNESCO. To celebrate, UNESCO has created a website, available at https://en.iyil2019.org/
The website will contribute to raising the awareness about this International Year and about the urgent need to preserve, revitalize and promote indigenous languages around the world.
On the website, relevant stakeholders and interested parties can find information about the plans for celebrating the IY2019, the actions and measures to be taken by United Nations agencies, governments, indigenous peoples’ organizations, civil society, academia, public and private sector, and other interested entities. Furthermore, this website will include a calendar of events, partners’ space for collaboration, access to resources in video, audio, image and text formats, and information about different partnership modalities and sponsorship benefits. Users will learn as well about events in their respective regions, discover how to participate, contribute and benefit from the rich variety of activities.

Speaking up for the mother tongue: How Arabic is being retooled for the 21st century

Far from being in decline, the Arabic language could surge in popularity if governments bring teaching techniques into the 21st century, experts believe.
According to leading linguists and scholars, headlines in recent years warning of the “death” of Arabic ignore the true picture.
Their comments come as the world marks UN Arabic Language Day on Dec. 18. Each year UNESCO collaborates with the Saudi Arabian delegation — with the support of the Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Foundation — to recognize Arabic’s immense contribution to science and culture, including philosophy and the arts.

Title: 2018-2019 Teachers of Critical Languages Program
Body:
The Teachers of Critical Languages Program, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, is designed to increase the study and acquisition of important world languages in U.S. schools. This program enables primary and secondary schools to strengthen their teaching of Mandarin and Arabic by bringing Chinese, Egyptian, and Moroccan, teachers to the U.S. to teach their native languages and culture for an academic year. The exchange teachers receive on-going methodological observation and training opportunities, live and work in an immersive English environment, and receive a certificate of participation following their exchange.
2019-2020 TCLP applications are now available; the deadline for US host schools to apply is January 22 (Chinese teachers need to apply by January 11, and Arabic teachers need to apply by January 4).
