Title: State of Alaska Prioritizes the Survival of Alaska Native Languages

State of Alaska Prioritizes the Survival of Alaska Native Languages
by Michael Mason
September 24, 2018

On Sunday, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed Administrative Order 300 calling for action to ensure the survival of Alaska Native Languages, many of which are threatened with extinction. Administrative Order 300 began as House Concurrent Resolution 19, which passed the Alaska Legislature this year with broad bipartisan support. The resolution was guided through the legislative process by sponsor Representative Dan Ortiz (I-Ketchikan).

...With Governor Walker’s signature on Administrative Order 300, the State of Alaska joins the Alaska Native Language Preservation and Advisory Council in acknowledging a “linguistic emergency” that threatens the continued use of many Alaska Native languages. Earlier this year, the council warned that most of the 20 recognized indigenous languages in Alaska could become extinct by the end of the 21st century unless there are policy changes to support the learning and speaking of these languages.

“There is still work to be done. This linguistic emergency declaration is just the beginning. Now it’s time to buckle down and fight for the survival of these languages and the cultures they represent,” said Rep. Ortiz.

Montana's tribal college presidents share ways they're preserving Native languages
by MIKE FERGUSON
September 23, 2018

Four tribal college presidents say their institutions are trying new methods to preserve — maybe even expand — the number of people who can read, write or speak their tribal language.

The four presidents — David Yarlott of Little Big Horn College in Crow Agency, Richard Littlebear of Chief Dull Knife College in Lame Deer, Carole Falcon-Chandler of Aaniiih Nakoda College in Harlem and Haven Gourneau of Fort Peck Community College in Poplar — spoke in Billings Friday as part of City College’s Tribal Language Symposium.
