The Comprehension of Relative Clauses by Romance Learners of English: Syntactic and Semantic Influences
By Marie-Anne C.M. Duffeler
Published by LOT Publications

Relative clauses have fascinated linguists and psycholinguists for a long time because of their syntactic complexity and their high frequency in language. This dissertation examines the comprehension of syntactically and semantically varied relative clauses by learners of English having French or Italian as L1. It shows first that the L2 comprehension of relative clauses follows a gradient of difficulty, but that the latter does not match Keenan and Comrie’s (1977) Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy. Second, it reveals that this comprehension is affected by syntactic as well as semantic variables. In particular, it is influenced by the syntactic function of the relative clause, the syntactic placement of the preposition in oblique relative clauses, and the semantic content of the preposition used in oblique relative clauses. Finally it fails to demonstrate evidence of cross-linguistic transfer. These results lead to the conclusion that theoretical accounts of relative clause comprehension based only on syntax cannot be satisfactory, that methodological precision is essential in the study of relative clauses, and finally that L2 learners may acquire native-like parsing strategies.

Title: Book: Third Age Learners of Foreign Languages
Body:

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?K=9781783099405

Third Age Learners of Foreign Languages
Edited by Danuta Gabrys-Barker
Published by Multilingual Matters

People are increasingly reaching the so-called third age, a period when seniors search for a renewed purpose to life and spend time undertaking activities that they consider motivating, such as the learning of a foreign language. The study of language learning among aging populations has become a fast-growing area of research and this book is one of the first attempts to bring together what we know about this age group and their profiles as foreign language learners. Contributors to the volume discuss the issue from various psychological, neurological and pedagogical perspectives. Each of the chapters provides an updated theoretical background and offers some initial conclusions on the basis of original empirical studies carried out. Chapters challenge certain familiar preconceptions and assumptions about senior learners, offer the reader ideas for future research in this under-studied area and provide some practical advice for applying the proposals and solutions offered in real foreign language third-age classrooms.

Title: Annual Meeting of the American Comparative Literature Association
Body:

From https://www.acla.org/

The American Comparative Literature Association's 2018 Annual Meeting will take place at UCLA in Los Angeles, California, March 29th through April 1st. For more details go to https://www.acla.org/annual-meeting

About the ACLA: “In its largest sense, comparative literature promotes the study of intercultural relations that cross national boundaries, multicultural relations within a particular society, and the interactions between literature and other forms of human activity, including the arts, the sciences, philosophy, and cultural artifacts of all kinds.

“The members of the ACLA are thus joined not by a national, linguistic, or methodological investment held in common, but by the shared condition of teaching and writing across nations, languages, and cultures--and hence by their lively interest in comparison as both a theoretical and a practical matter.”

Russian Flagship Practices: Intensive Language Learning for Students of All Majors
January 25, 2018

The Language Flagship, an initiative of the National Security Education Program (thelanguageflagship.org), is a national initiative to change the way Americans learn languages through a groundbreaking approach to language education. Successful graduates of the Russian Flagship Program will have developed Superior-level language and cultural proficiency in Russian and can apply that proficiency to their field of choice.

The goal of the Language Flagship is to create a replicable program model that can be implemented for any language on any campus. In this webinar, following up on a two-part article in the ACTR Letter, Karen Evans-Romaine will describe the main features of the Russian Flagship Program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and talk about ways in which aspects of Flagship programs can be implemented in other Russian programs.
