Crosslinguistic Influence and Distinctive Patterns of Language Learning: Findings and Insights from a Learner Corpus
Edited by Anne Golden, Scott Jarvis, and Kari Tenfjord
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book details patterns of language use that can be found in the writing of adult immigrant learners of Norwegian as a second language (L2). Each study draws its data from a single corpus of texts written for a proficiency test of L2 Norwegian by learners representing 10 different first language (L1) backgrounds. The participants of the study are immigrants to Norway and the book deals with the varying levels and types of language difficulties faced by such learners from differing backgrounds. The studies examine the learners’ use of Norwegian in relation to the morphological, syntactic, lexical, semantic and pragmatic patterns they produce in their essays. Nearly all the studies in the book rely on analytical methods specifically designed to isolate the effects of the learners’ L1s on their use of L2 Norwegian, and every chapter highlights patterns that distinguish different L1 groups from one another.

Posthumanist Applied Linguistics
By Alastair Pennycook
Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group

Drawing on a range of contexts and data sources, from urban multilingualism to studies of animal communication, Posthumanist Applied Linguistics offers us alternative ways of thinking about the human predicament, with major implications for research, education and politics.

Exploring the advent of the Anthropocene, new forms of materialism, distributed language, assemblages, and the boundaries between humans, other animals and objects, eight incisive chapters by one of the world's foremost applied linguistics open up profound questions to do with language and the world. This critical posthumanist applied linguistic perspective is intended for researchers and students in the fields of Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics.

Taking Chinese to the World: Language, Culture and Identity in Confucius Institute Teachers
By Wei Ye
Published by Multilingual Matters

In this book the author explores the work and living experiences of Confucius Institute Chinese teachers (CICTs) in the UK, how they interpret and make sense of their sojourning experience, and how this context and the wider globalized social environment have impacted on their understandings and their personal growth. Because of their betwixt and between situation, the CICTs’ stories differ from those of other immigrants, international students and pre-service student teachers, who have been the main focus in L2 identity research. The book offers new insights into the Confucius Institutes (CI) with real life stories from teachers drawn from blogs, interviews and focus groups, drawing attention in the process to weaknesses of the CI program and offering suggestions for ways forward which will be of interest to both stakeholders and those responsible for future international exchange programs.

Translanguaging: Opportunities and Challenges in a Global World
May 3-4, 2018
University of Ottawa, Canada

Conference theme: Translanguaging, a construct referring to the complex use of more than one language as a (combined) resource, has captured the imagination of researchers, educators, and policy makers around the world. The role of translanguaging as a linguistic and social practice in family, community, educational and institutional contexts raises a number of stimulating and challenging questions that call for continued discussion.

Proposals for oral presentations, posters, workshops, thematic symposia and round tables addressing the conference theme from multidisciplinary perspectives (educational, linguistic, social, policy, etc.) are welcome. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

• The meaning and evolution of the term translanguaging over time and across disciplines, and its links with concepts such as plurilingualism and biliteracy.
• The role of translanguaging in bilingual/immersion education, language teaching and learning, and language assessment.
• Translanguaging rules, norms and practices in institutional settings (e.g. bilingual universities, government institutions, etc.).
• Minority and heritage language maintenance and translanguaging.
• Translanguaging in bilingual and multilingual societies around the world.
• Language policy and translanguaging.
• Translanguaging and family language policy.
• Technology and translanguaging.
• Translanguaging and intercomprehension.
• Translanguaging and its interrelationship with other issues and phenomena, such as code-switching, language contact, diglossia and heteroglossia, mixed languages, language variation and change, language attrition, language shift, language loss, bi-/multilingual child language development, bi-/multilingualism across the lifespan, superdiversity, migration, identity, globalization, peace, etc.

Title: Promote World Language Teaching as a Career: Educators Rising
Body:

From https://www.actfl.org/news/press-releases/educators-rising-recruiting-world-language-teachers

For the third year in a row, more than 40 states plus the District of Columbia have reported a teacher shortage in world languages, an all-time high for the subject area since the Department of Education began collecting data over 25 years ago. In the report, language teaching vacancies are at the top of the list next to other key subject areas like math, science, and special education.

…A major contributing factor to the shortage is declining teacher preparation program enrollments. From 2009-2014, teacher education enrollment dropped 35 percent, according to a 2016 report by the Learning Policy Institute.

…[The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages]

ACTFL has developed 5 ready-to-use modules that provide all the materials you need for starting a conversation with your students: a teacher checklist, inspirational videos, ready-made presentations, articles, discussion topics, and more that will keep your students engaged. Extended activities and suggested projects allow you and your future educators to move at your own pace. has released a new recruitment tool that offers students a vision of the future where teaching a world language is an empowering career option: Educators Rising.
