Multidisciplinary Approaches to Bilingualism in the Hispanic and Lusophone World
Edited by Kate Bellamy, Michael W. Child, Paz González, Antje Muntendam, and M. Carmen Parafita Couto
Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company

This volume offers a multidisciplinary view of cutting-edge research on bilingualism in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking regions, with the aim of building a bridge between sub-fields and approaches that often find themselves isolated from one another. The thirteen contributions in this volume offer a glimpse of the diversity of bilingualism present in the Hispanic and Lusophone world, shedding light on the sheer variety of speaker communities, language pairings (e.g., Spanish-English, Spanish-Basque, Spanish-Dutch, Portuguese-Spanish-English, Portuguese-English, Spanish-K’ichee Maya, and Spanish-Ixcatec) and speaker types (e.g., simultaneous bilinguals, and early and late sequential bilinguals). The diversity present in this collection of papers, both in empirical coverage and methodological and theoretical approaches, will be of interest to a wide range of students and researchers in bilingualism and Hispanic and Lusophone linguistics.

Title: Book: Learning French from Spanish and Spanish from French

Learning French from Spanish and Spanish from French: A Short Guide
By Patricia V. Lunn and Anita Jon Alkhas
Published by Georgetown University Press

Learning French from Spanish and Spanish from French provides adult English speakers who have learned either Spanish or French as a second language with the tools to learn the other as a third language. Research in the growing fields of third-language acquisition and multilingualism documents how successful language learners intuitively build on their existing knowledge as they learn a new language. In this vein, Learning French from Spanish and Spanish from French takes advantage of the fact that learners with intermediate proficiency in a second language are used to thinking consciously about language, know themselves as language learners, and can capitalize on what they know about one language to understand the other. With chapters conveniently organized by grammatical concept and including supplementary resources such as exercises, parallel reading texts, and audio files, this book will benefit students, travelers, and budding multilinguals alike.

Title: Call for Papers: Language Assessment Research Conference
Body:

From https://apling.engl.iastate.edu/conferences/larc2018/

Iowa State University is pleased to announce that it will host the 2018 Language Assessment Research Conference (LARC). This conference will take place March 21-23, 2018, in Ames, Iowa. LARC is being held in an effort to fill the growing need for a language assessment conference that is accessible to researchers in North America.

LARC 2018 will provide a forum for concentrated discussion of applied linguistics methods used in validation studies for language assessments to support a range of claims about the validity of test score interpretations, uses, and consequences. Research methods in applied linguistics appear to be increasingly useful in language testing research because of the need to investigate new types of language tests for an expanded set of purposes delivered by ever-changing technologies. Some methods of interest in validation studies are response process analysis, such as eye-tracking, conversation analysis, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, language-focused ethnography, critical inquiry into policy issues, differential item functioning, factor analysis, generalizability theory, Many-facet Rasch Measurement, and structural equation modeling.

Abstracts due: September 15, 2017
