Call for Papers: Special Issue 36.1: Moving forward with critical CALL to promote social inclusivity
 
This special issue will explore the interplay between technology-mediated language learning and issues of social injustice, power, and inequality. … Integral questions from the perspective of critical CALL include: How does technology play a role in this dynamic? How do neoliberal principles such as an individualistic competition model and CALL intertwine? (How) can we leverage technology to promote “social inclusion” (Warschauer, 2003, p. 8)? Gruba and Hinkelman’s (2012) three-tiered approach to the design and evaluation of blended learning experiences provides a springboard for expanding the study of critical CALL. Where most critical CALL research to date has been concerned with micro-level issues (e.g., how a particular technology used in a particular classroom helped students learn the target language), there is relatively little discussion of meso-level issues and macro-level issues. By focusing on these two areas, the special issue issue seeks to uncover which structures, strategies, or modes of technology-mediated language instruction serve to “enact, sustain, legitimate, condone or ignore social inequality and injustice” (van Dijk, 1993, p. 252). Ultimately, it asks a similar question to that posed by Motha (2014, p. xxiii): How do we participate in CALL “in a way that is responsible, ethical, and conscious of the consequences of our practice”?

Title: Himalayan Studies Conference 2017

Himalayan Studies Conference V is scheduled for September 1-4, 2017 (Labor Day Weekend) at the University of Colorado Boulder. The conference will start the evening of Friday the 1st and end by midday on Monday the 4th.
 
The keynote speakers for HSC V will be the acclaimed author Manjushree Thapa, whose works of fiction and non-fiction explore current events in Nepal and themes of war and peace, development and diaspora, and the scholar and writer Lama Jabb, Research Fellow at Oxford University, whose research focuses on modern Tibetan literature and its interface with oral traditions.

We’d have a better chance of preserving Africa’s dying languages if we learned their history

Across the world, African languages are slowly taking the center stage and are being recognized for their importance. For instance, you can now learn Zulu on an app, read a growing list of articles in African languages on Wikipedia, and receive thousands of dollars in awards for your fictional Swahili piece or poem. And many universities from Ethiopia to South Africa are making African languages like Afan Oromo and isiXhosa a compulsory subject.
 
But Africa still has some of the world’s highest concentration of at-risk languages. And that can be reversed by first understanding and studying the past history, present evolution, and future use of these languages.
