Title: CASLS Staff Retreat
Body:
On Thursday, April 20th, CASLS staff went to Portland, OR, for the annual CASLS Staff Retreat. Beginning the retreat at the Labyrinth Escape Games, CASLS broke into two groups. Each group entered a room and was given a task: solve the clues and save the world! Working together as a team each group attempted to solve the mystery presented to them. Meanwhile, a trained professional from Labryrinth observed the team dynamics. Once either the challenge was solved or the time was up, whichever came first, the Labryrinth observer had a discussion with each group to talk about what they observed during the task as far as how the team worked together, highlighting positives as well as the areas of improvement.
"It was kind of a non-traditional staff retreat for us" said Li-Hsien Yang, East Asia Programs Director. "It was interesting to have an outside observer comment on how we work together and to see how much it matched what we already knew about ourselves as a team. Also, it was really fun!"

Title: Book: The Oxford Handbook of Pragmatics
Body:
The Oxford Handbook of Pragmatics
Edited by Yan Huang
Published by the Oxford University Press
This volume brings together distinguished scholars from all over the world to present an authoritative, thorough, and yet accessible state-of-the-art survey of current issues in pragmatics. Following an introduction by the editor, the volume is divided into five thematic parts. Chapters in Part I are concerned with schools of thought, foundations, and theories, while Part II deals with central topics in pragmatics, including implicature, presupposition, speech acts, deixis, reference, and context. In Part III, the focus is on cognitively-oriented pragmatics, covering topics such as computational, experimental, and neuropragmatics. Part IV takes a look at socially and culturally-oriented pragmatics such as politeness/impoliteness studies, cross- and intercultural, and interlanguage pragmatics. Finally, the chapters in Part V explore the interfaces of pragmatics with semantics, grammar, morphology, the lexicon, prosody, language change, and information structure.

Title: Book: A Journey through the Content and Language Integrated Learning Landscape
Body:
A Journey through the Content and Language Integrated Learning Landscape: Problems and Prospects
Edited by Carmel Mary Coonan, Luciana Favaro, and Marcella Menegale
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing
Interest in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), in Europe and beyond, has increased exponentially since it first appeared on the scene in Europe in the early 1990s. CLIL has grown to become a much-discussed topic of language education today, with the number of publications pertaining to the field continuing to increase.
Researchers, teachers, teacher trainers, course planners and others involved in CLIL are constantly searching for new studies to help them understand how CLIL is evolving and how best it can be implemented. As the concept is now informing the pedagogical principles of different educational realities, research and reflection are now required to further understand its potential and implications, its inherent difficulties and possible applications. This volume was conceived with this idea in mind.
The book primarily covers three macro areas: learning, teaching and training. It provides insight into the latest areas of research and reflection that are characterizing the CLIL field in the current decade. The wide range of topics covered reveal, for example, a shift in interest towards CLIL at the tertiary level, focusing on lecturer and student perceptions and problems.
