Title: ACTFL Releases Position Statements on World Languages and Computer Coding
Body:

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages has released two position statements to express its stance on computer coding and foreign languages.

The first position statement, “What is a World Language,” offers a concrete definition and specific criteria to determine what constitutes a world language.

The second position statement, “Supporting the Study of World Languages and Computer Science,” advocates the study of both world languages and computer science as essential but not equivalent skills. It will serve as a reference for educators and legislators alike as this topic is discussed in state legislatures.

Title: Classics and Social Justice
Body:

From https://classicssocialjustice.wordpress.com/

The purpose of the Classics and Social Justice group is to bring together those scholars in the field who are working in various ways on social justice, using Classics. This work is a form of outreach that brings Classics out of the academy and returns it to the least privileged in our society; group members seek to draw together those trained in their field who are in some cases giving intellectual life-lines to those in nearly hopeless situations: the incarcerated, veterans, and children with least access to quality education. The members’ goal is to create a dialogue about how Classicists and their students are using Classics, texts, traditions, and receptions, to address problems of inequality–social, educational, economic, etc.

Title: Professional Development Resource: 5 Essential Practices for Teaching ELLs
Body:

From https://www.teachingchannel.org/blog/2017/01/20/five-essential-practices-ells/

San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has drafted a document and co-produced a series of videos with Teaching Channel. The Five Essential Practices guiding document represents what the district believes to be the most high-leverage practices for English learners. It was developed over time in collaboration with practitioners, content specialists across disciplines, district partners, and experts in the field. After the adoption of the 2012 CA ELD Standards, the document was further refined to incorporate key instructional shifts reflected in the updated standards. Here’s a summary of each practice:

•    Practice One: Strategically Plan and Integrate Focused Academic Language
•    Practice Two: Teach Students to Analyze, Write, and Create Complex Text
•    Practice Three: Clarify New Language and Concepts Using a Variety of Strategies and Modalities
•    Practice Four: Foster Heterogeneity During Integrated ELD
•    Practice Five: Use Formative Assessment to Inform Instruction
