************************************************************************
Director of Language Curriculum Development, Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region, Indiana University (pending position approval)
Position Available: The Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR), a government-funded center based at Indiana University, is currently seeking a full-time experienced specialist in materials development and proficiency-based language teaching to direct its curricular development program for Central Asian languages from August 2003 to July 2006 (pending renewable funding). The Center, with major support from a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Language Resource Center grant, is developing introductory and intermediate materials for five languages. Currently, work has begun on two languages, Pashto (Afghanistan and Pakistan) and Uyghur (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China). In 2003-04, curriculum development for Tajik and Uzbek will begin; in 2004-05, curriculum development for Turkmen will be added. The position is at the rank of Academic Specialist (non-tenured).
Requirements and Responsibilities: The successful applicant should have a Masters degree, or preferably a Ph.D., in applied linguistics or a closely related discipline. The candidate should have extensive
experience working with less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) and have intermediate language ability in one of these. The specialist must be experienced in designing curricular materials for LCTLs, be familiar with task-based, proficiency-based, and communicative approaches to materials design, and be able to conduct workshops on a range of topics in curriculum development and language pedagogy for center staff. He or she will provide overall direction and supervision for each of the Center's five curriculum development language projects noted above.
Center staff includes native-speaking language developers for each
language, curriculum development and computer assisted language learning (CALL) specialists, and programming staff. The goal of each language project is to produce proficiency-oriented course materials for beginning and intermediate levels of language instruction, in print and electronic (CD-ROM, Web) form, and to teach these languages during the eight-week intensive summer language institutes held annually in Bloomington.
Application Procedure: Applications should contain a cover letter with a detailed explanation of relevant experience and approach to materials development and language teaching; a current CV; contact information for three references; and samples of work or publications. Applications should be sent in the following ways: electronically to celcar@indiana.edu, by fax to (812) 856-1206; or in hard copy to Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region, Indiana University, Coulter Hall 255, Bloomington, IN 47405, USA. For full consideration, applications should arrive no later than May 25, 2003.
For further information about this position, contact Dr. Roxana Ma

Title: Looking for ideas and suggestions
Body: From: "Kevin Cox"
Dear wwwtools reader,
The City University of Hong Kong has supported the wwwtools newsletter
since its inception in 1998 and will continue to support it.
The following small questionnaire is to gauge your reactions and get
your thoughts and ideas on generating income to further continue and
develop the newsletter. Any income generated would be primarily used to further develop the newsletter and conduct research for you. If you
could reply to this email with your ideas and comments it would be most appreciated.
1. The newsletter will remain free to all but people would be asked for subscriptions. Would you be likely to donate anything and what do you think would be a reasonable amount to ask?
2. We would like to encourage annual subscriptions from institutions. We were thinking along the lines
* K-12 institutions - $US50
* Post- secondary institutions - $US150
* Commercial/Corporate/Non Profits - $US300
Each subscribing institution would be entitled to one topic to be
researched each year and would encourage their staff/students/members to subscribe to the newsletter.
3. There would be a sponsorship offer of $1000 US available to
institutions/organisations which would entitle them to five research
topics and their logo, some text and a link on the website.
4. Each newsletter would have a text ad on an appropriate subject
(conference promotion, book promotion, course promotion). Would you
object to small text ads in the newsletter?
5. Do you know any institution, organisation or company who may be
interested in ads to people like yourself? The cost will $25 US per ad.
6. We will offer a research facility where topics will be researched
(along the lines of the newsletters) for a cost of $150 US. The format
of reporting on topics researched on demand will be tighter than the
scattergun style of newsletters - and more geared to the particular
client's expectations.
7. Can you think of any other ways we might be able to obtain income to help keep the newsletter operating.
8. Are there ways you would like to see the newsletter develop? Do you
have any ideas on ways it could be made more useful to yourself and your colleagues.
Thanks in anticipation,
Kevin Cox
