More than 70 languages are spoken in contemporary Iran, yet all governmental correspondence and educational textbooks must be written in Farsi. To date, the Iranian mother tongue debate has remained far from the international scholarly exchanges of ideas about multilingual education. This book bridges that gap using interviews with four prominent academic experts in linguistic human rights, mother tongue education and bilingual and multilingual education. The author examines the arguments for rejecting multilingual education in Iran, and the four interviewees counter those arguments with evidence that mother tongue-based education has resulted in positive outcomes for the speakers of non-dominant language groups and the country itself. It is hoped that this book will engage an international audience with the debate in Iran and show how multilingual education could benefit the country.

In Understanding the World Language edTPA: Research‐Based Policy and Practice, two researchers in the forefront of world language edTPA discuss the new beginning teacher portfolio, including its required elements, federal and state policies concerning teacher evaluation, and research from their own programs. Higher education faculty members and language teacher preparation program coordinators who would like to better understand edTPA requirements and gain suggestions for necessary programmatic changes will find this book of interest.
The book is composed of eight chapters. The authors begin by describing edTPA and how it became a national trend to assess beginning teacher ability. In Chapter 2, the authors present ideas about curricular changes that may need to occur in traditional world language teacher education programs, as well as suggestions to assist teacher candidates as they begin to develop their portfolios. Afterward, the authors discuss the context for learning (Chapter 3) and they begin with assessment, moving to planning, and then to instruction (Chapters 4, 5, 6). In each chapter, the authors discuss the work sample that teacher candidates must create, an analysis of a high‐scoring portfolio, and steps to stimulate teacher candidates’ professional thinking. In Chapter 7, the authors present activities for the methods classroom. In the final chapter, the authors provide a critical analysis of edTPA, in general, and the world language edTPA, in particular.

The conference theme for 2016 is Growing Our Story and will be held at University School of Milwaukee in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 24th, 2016. The conference will offer three session types: Beginner, Experienced, and General Sessions. Beginner sessions are for those world language teachers who have not been to a CI/TPRS training, who have only dabbled in CI/TPRS practices, and those who are not completely comfortable with the basics of CI/TPRS. The morning will consist of a workshop-style training in basic CI strategies with time to practice. Experienced sessions are for world language teachers who have been to a CI/TPRS training, who have used CI/TPRS at least a full year in all their classes, and those who feel comfortable with basic strategies. The morning will consist of a workshop-style training in more advanced CI strategies with time to practice. General Sessions are good for both groups. Sessions specifically for Hebrew teachers will also be available by Alisa Shapiro-Rosenberg.

Through a generous grant from the Qatar Foundation International, Concordia Language Villages is able to offer two Qatar Professional Development Workshops for current and future teachers of Arabic at their beautiful Finnish Language Village facilities in Bemidji, Minnesota. This project will bring together K-12 Arabic language teachers from across the United States in two exciting opportunities to participate in professional development programs this year. The 2016 - 2017 workshop themes will be Learner Engagement. Preference will be given to K-12 Arabic teachers from the Midwest, but all Arabic teachers are welcome to apply.
In addition to new and returning participants, this year's workshop is structured to include those who have already attended multiple QFI-CLV workshops in the past to enroll as teacher-leader participants.

For those who have begun creating literacy lessons using the FLLITE approach, Joanna Luks will present methods of assessing students' work as they go through the steps of a FLLITE lesson.
The FLLITE project aims to create an educational community of language teachers who will create and share crowdsourced literacy lessons based on culturally authentic texts (words, images, videos, audio) for the L2 classroom. The lessons will refine and extend the pedagogical principles of the crossdisciplinary approach of “the literary in the everyday”. Here, “the literary” refers to the range of playful, metaphorical, and non-conventional ways of making meaning, and "the everyday" refers to language use in contexts outside of canonical literature.
Teachers of all languages are welcome.

Do you teach German already, but would like to improve your own language skills in a group of other German teachers? In that case, our online group course for German teachers is perfect for you!
This course was created for learners at the B2 and C1 skill levels, and topics and assignments were especially designed for German teachers. The course lasts eight weeks with a workload of approximately three hours per week.
You will complete assignments online at your own convenience. Throughout the duration of the course, you will meet with your classmates in a virtual classroom four times to discuss ideas, to conduct debates, and to exchange lesson plans. Finally, you will work at your own pace to practice your listening, reading and writing skills.
This course is offered twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The next course will start on September 26 and end on November 20, 2016. Please complete the registration form by September 05, 2016.

Today we hear daily about climate change and its effects on all aspects of life on our planet. Both nature and the environment are topics especially relevant for German culture, and Germany is at the forefront of environmental protection policies, research and innovation.
The materials and activities we will explore this weekend aim at discussing various aspects of this important topic, while giving us the opportunity to use the German language for our own pleasure and on many different skill levels. Many of the activities can be modified and used for the development of communicative as well as culturally authentic German lessons, especially for the intermediate and advanced classroom. The goal is to familiarize participants with concrete examples to practice and expand individual language skills as well as cultural knowledge.
