Title: Coming to a Theater near You: Young Goethe in Love
Body: Goethe is Germany's most famous and influential poet, philosopher and all-around intellectual – but once upon a time, he was a failed young law student with quashed literary hopes... Director Phillip Stölzl (NORTH FACE) returns to the very wellspring of Romanticism with Young Goethe In Love – loosely based on Goethe's autobiographical masterpiece The Sorrows of Young Werther. The film is a beguiling and refreshingly innocent period romantic drama, following the story of Goethe’s heartbreak and the literary debut that resulted – one that immediately launched him as an international celebrity. In theaters starting November 4th. Title: Roman History Course Online
Body: The UNCG Greensboro Department of Classical Studies is happy to announce that we will offer a graduate-level, online course, Readings in Roman History (CCI 579) for Spring 2011. Enrollment is open to students with a B.A. in Latin (or equivalent). The course examines themes and topics in Roman history from the founding of the Republic in 509 BC through the death of Marcus Aurelius in AD 180, with particular attention focused on the three centuries between the First Punic War and the end of the Julio-Claudian line. Through a variety of primary and secondary sources, including both archaeological and literary evidence, we will build a strong foundation in the social, political, and legal history of Rome. Knowledge of Latin is required, but the majority of the readings will be in English. The course is designed to give secondary school Latin teachers a solid foundation in Roman history, and its online format should make it easy to fit into your busy schedules. It fulfills a core requirement in our M.Ed. in Latin curriculum, but has spaces reserved for non-degree students as well. For more information about the course or about our M.Ed. in Latin program (nearly all of which can now be completed online), please contact our Director of Graduate Study, Dr. David Wharton (wharton at uncg dot edu) or the instructor for this course, Dr. Jonathan Zarecki (jpzareck at uncg dot edu). Title: Caligula 3-D: Man, Myth, Emperor Symposium
Body: From http://www.cavclassics.org/announcements.htm#caligula Caligula 3-D: Man, Myth, Emperor Symposium Sunday, December 4, 2011 Caligula Comes To Life At VMFA by Peter J. Schertz, Ph.D., Curator of Ancient Art, VMFA For nearly a year, a team of international scholars has been doing new research focused on VMFA’s star example of ancient sculpture – the statue of Emperor Gaius, a.k.a. "Caligula." The results will be presented at the symposium "Caligula 3-D: Man, Myth, Emperor" at VMFA on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Leslie Cheek Theater at the VMFA in Richmond. Admission is free, but tickets are required (Visit www.VMFA.museum/symposia/caligula for info and updates). Using advanced scanning technologies, we have been able to produce highly detailed (accurate to 0.25 mm!) 3-D digital renderings of the statue that have enabled us to virtually reconstruct the missing parts of the statue, correct previous restorations, and hypothesize (on the basis of new examinations) the statue’s original polychromy. Participants in the symposium will discuss issues that pertain directly to the proposed reconstructions of the statue; issues in the artistic representation of the Caligula; Caligula as a historical person; and the ancient and modern history and presentation of the statue. Many of the topics are not without controversy, and the discussion promises to be both lively and stimulating. Title: NPR Feature: In Miami, School Aims For 'Biliterate' Education
Body: From http://www.npr.org/2011/10/25/141584947/in-miami-school-aims-for-bi-literate-education In Miami, School Aims For 'Biliterate' Education by Claudio Sanchez October 25, 2011 Every morning, shortly after 8 o'clock, students at the Coral Way Elementary School pledge allegiance to the flag and stand for the national anthem. Then Spanish becomes the language of instruction. In one fourth-grade class, reading assignments, science, math and social studies lessons are entirely in Spanish. After lunch, classes switch to English. Most of the 1,500 students at the school are low-income, but their test scores are among the highest in the city. After eighth grade, many go on to Miami's top private and public high schools. Some take up a third and fourth language. There are about 440 public bilingual immersion schools across the country, up from only a handful in the 1970s. A growing number today teach Mandarin and French, not just Spanish. But in some states — California, Arizona, Colorado and Massachusetts — bilingual immersion programs are banned because a majority of voters don't think children can learn proper English and hold on to a foreign language and culture at the same time. Title: Justice Department Urges Alabama to Comply with Equal Access to Education
Body: From http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/01/us/alabama-schools-immigration Justice urges Alabama schools' compliance on immigrant laws By Terry Frieden November 1, 2011 The Justice Department Tuesday issued a letter to Alabama school districts to make sure they are abiding by federal law, which declares that a child may not be denied equal access to schools based on his or her immigration status. The letter from the Civil Rights Division asked each school district to describe its enrollment practices regarding immigrant students. The Justice Department quoted existing law that says denying innocent children the benefit of schooling because of their immigration status is unconstitutional. A spokesman for the Alabama Department of Education said there was no immediate comment on the Justice Department letter.
