Title: Linguistic Minority Research Institute

May 7-8, 2004 University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA
University of California Linguistic Minority Research Institute
LMRI 17th Annual Conference
Beverly Leaney, beverly@lmri.ucsb.edu, 805.893.2250
Call for Papers Deadline: March 1, 2004
Family Literacy and English Learners
The 2004 UC LMRI Annual Conference will focus on Family Literacy and
English learners. With the growth of state and federal accountability,
including the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, the need to improve the academic achievement of English learners has never been greater. One strategy for improving the reading development of English learners is to promote family literacy activities, such as the frequency and quality of shared storytelling and reading books.
Keynote Speakers:
Marjorie Faulstich Orellana, Ph.D. -- UCLA, Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences
Author of several studies (Harvard Educational Review, Reading Research Quarterly) on the role of immigrant children as translators and interpreters for their families.
Concha Delgado-Gaitan, Ph.D. -- UC Davis, Emeritus
Author, Involving Latino Parents in the Schools (forthcoming, Corwin Press) and Literacy for Empowerment: The role of parents in children's education (New York Falmer Press; 1990)
This year's conference hopes to address such topics as:
- What family literacy activities promote early literacy among English
learners?
- How can family literacy activities best compliment the literacy
activities in school?
- What is the impact of early literacy on academic achievement among
English learners?
- What interventions are most effective in developing literacy activities in the families of English learners?
- What can schools and teachers do to facilitate the development of family literacy programs?

Colleagues...a public school district on Long Island (NY) is currently
considering the creation of a Spanish for Heritage Speakers sequence at the middle and high school levels. I've offered to help in finding curriculum models currently being followed elsewhere in the country. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thank you.
