With the growth of state and federal accountability, including the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, the need to improve the academic achievement of English learners has never been greater. One strategy for improving the reading development of English learners is to promote family literacy activities, such as the frequency and quality of shared storytelling and reading books. Keynote Speakers: Marjorie Faulstich Orellana, Ph.D. -- UCLA, Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences Author of several studies (Harvard Educational Review, Reading Research Quarterly) on the role of immigrant children as translators and interpreters for their families. Concha Delgado-Gaitan, Ph.D. -- UC Davis, Emeritus Author, Involving Latino Parents in the Schools (forthcoming, Corwin Press) and Literacy for Empowerment: The role of parents in children's education (New York Falmer Press; 1990) This year's conference hopes to address such topics as: - What family literacy activities promote early literacy among English learners? - How can family literacy activities best compliment the literacy activities in school? - What is the impact of early literacy on academic achievement among English learners? - What interventions are most effective in developing literacy activities in the families of English learners? - What can schools and teachers do to facilitate the development of family literacy programs? |
