The Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language & Literacy (CERCLL)'s Language Teacher Symposium (LaTeS) series is a biannual day-long symposium at which K-12 language teachers can share ideas and issues that are specific to their community. The fall 2018 LaTes features Jacque Bott Van Houten.

Leveraging the Power of the Language and Intercultural Can-Dos
November 3

The original NCSSFL-ACTFL Can Do statements for Language simplified and clarified goal setting for learning and instruction. The revised version provides a tool that helps everyone—teachers and learners—better understand language progression across the proficiency levels. The new Intercultural Communication Can-Dos reframe how we think about unit organization and lead us in a natural way toward a more PBL-friendly curriculum.

In this workshop we will explore the new Can-Dos, the changes and the new format, the theories upon which they are based, and the examples created for diverse learners. We will engage in activities that increase your knowledge of the ACTFL proficiency scale and how it can be used to assess what learners know about culture through their use of language. You will use the new document to inform your level expectations, unit planning and daily lessons. Finally, you will create a unit overview and support it by developing an activity based on an authentic resource. Join us and see what the powerful new Can-Dos can mean for you and your learners!
