TitleOhio World Languages Model Curriculum Draft Available for Inspection and Comment

The state model curriculum aims to support the implementation of Ohio’s New Learning Standards for K-12 World Languages, elaborate on the proficiency-based nature of these standards, and guide world language educators and school districts as they design instructional lessons and local courses of study for learners of all languages and all grade levels.

ODE world language consultants collaborated with world language experts and a representative committee of 18 Ohio teachers to develop this draft of the Model Curriculum. Additionally, ideas, strategies and resources were sought from language teachers all over the state of Ohio and carefully vetted for inclusion. This work has resulted in the creation of an organized curricular framework that contains a vast array of tools and resources to help educators design curricula and assessments, identify high-quality resources and inform instruction. Ultimately, the Model Curriculum will allow teachers to address the specific needs of their diverse learners in keeping with best practices in our educational field.

Before this draft can be presented to the State Board of Education for final approval in June 2014, it is imperative that practitioners in the field be given the opportunity to review the draft and provide the ODE with their feedback. The Draft Model Curriculum and survey will be available for Ohio teachers’ inspection and comment from now through February 17, 2014.

Here’s how you can review the draft document and complete the feedback survey:

1. Go to this URL: http://education.ohio.gov/WorldLanguagesModelCurriculum

2. Click on the red “Complete the Survey” link to begin reviewing the Model Curriculum components and completing the survey.

3. Complete the participant information questions first.

4. Assess the six different components of the model curriculum by clicking on the links which are embedded within each corresponding section of the survey.

5. IMPORTANT: Be sure to keep the survey open as you review each component. The Model Curriculum components will pop up in another window. As you finish up your review of each Model curriculum component, close that window ONLY. Do not close the survey window or your responses will be lost.

6. After you review each major component of the model curriculum, answer the corresponding survey questions. Although some questions are optional, we hope you will be as complete as possible when providing your feedback.

7. Important: In order to make this review manageable, examples have only been provided for Spanish at the Novice High level. Please review these sections even if your language is not Spanish or you do not work with learners who are at the Novice High level of proficiency. Keep in mind that the final version of the model curriculum will include materials for all languages and all levels.
