TitleL2 Pragmatics: The Basics
SourceCASLS
Body

This activity was developed for teachers beginning to implement the study of pragmatics with their learners. It provides an introduction to the Intercultural Pragmatic Interactual Competence (IPIC) Model and is appropriate to implement with any language function.

Procedure:

1. Familiarize yourself with the IPIC Model by reading Sykes et al. (2020).

2. Watch this overview of the IPIC Model. It will support understanding of the reading.

3. Select a language function you want to explore (e.g., apologies, greetings, or requests). Consider each component of the IPIC Model (knowledge, analysis, subjectivity, and awareness) in relationshio to the function at hand. Document your ideas on the IPIC chart using either your L1 or your L2.

4. Optional: Document your ideas from the language you did not select for Step 3 to compare how the function is realized in both languages.

Notes:

While this activity was created for teachers, it would also be beneficial to utilize the IPIC chart with learners when introducing and evaluating target language functions.
