The text below is an excerpt from CASLS's module on self-drected learning. Please feel free to use the entire module (or an excerpt) as the learners you work with adapt to new learning environments . Each section includes various learner resources, including videos and materials to guide and inspire goal articulation, strategy selection, evidence creation and evaluation, and self-reflection.

How Do Learners Evaluate Progress?

Once learners have created evidence of growth, they will need to self-assess the quality of that evidence. Self-assessment is a critical step, because it helps learners figure out the ways in which they have been successful and the places where they could use a little more help. Knowing this information will help them as they continue learning their new language. Learners will be able to see what they need to practice more and what they already do really well. Have learners watch the video below to learn what self-assessment is and how to conduct it for their language learning goal.

Ask learners to use the following self-assessment guide to evaluate their hard work. Chose one or more of the seven included templates. Encourage them to be honest, but not too hard on themselves.
