Body

The text below is an excerpt from CASLS's module on self-drected learning. Please feel free to use the entire module (or an excerpt) as the learners you work with adapt to new environments for learning. Each section includes various learner resources, including videos and materials to guide and inspire goal articulation, strategy selection, evidence creation and evaluation, and self-reflection.

How do I know what goals to set?

As you can probably tell by now, setting goals is a critical component of self-directed learning. They provide direction for what learners are going to do while learning a new language. But how do they decide where to start and how do you help them? The video below will explain how to set a goal that is good for the learners' interests and their level of language so they can begin language learning.

Now that they've learned how to set an appropriate goal for themselves, learners will need to figure out their proficiency level. To help learners understand a little more about proficiency and how that will inform their goal setting, follow the guide below.

And to browse the Can-Do Statements, check out this link to the LFO website. If learners don’t have an LFO account yet, check out this webpage with NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements and some extra guidance. The pages are an important resource, so learners can bookmark them to reference on their language learning journey.
