TitleReading a Newspaper Article about Current Events
SourceCASLS Activity of the Week
Body

This activity is designed to aid learners in learning to read news articles using relevant strategies.

Outcome:        Learners will be able to use anticipation, annotation, and reflection strategies to synthesize important information from a news article.

Resources:      Reading a News Paper Article handout

Procedure:

  1. Begin by selecting a news article relevant to the course content. The ideal text would contain images, a clear title, and current information.
  2. Pre-reading: Have learners anticipate the content based on the look of the article.  Begin by asking about characteristics that most newspapers have in common. Then ask learners to guess the content of the specific article based on the images and title.
  3. During Reading: As learners read, ask them to annotate the article for specific information using the annotation key provided in Step 2.
  4. After Reading: Have learners go back and check the accuracy of their predictions and then create five 'tweets' (short statements around 140 characters) that summarize what they read and give an opinion.
