Title: Call for Participants: Japanese Assessment of Listening Proficiency Pilot
Body: Language program directors around the country have identified assessment and placement as key issues in managing language programs. Most of us would like to measure our studentsÂ’ proficiency and real-world language ability, but existing tests are expensive and time-consuming; few of us can manage to fit them in. Having your students participate in a pilot version of this new assessment will help our profession develop a better way to measure student performance and will directly benefit your students by helping them to understand the skills they need in order to be proficient. The Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) has developed an online assessment of reading, writing, and speaking proficiency. We are currently piloting the final installment of the four proficiency skills: listening. This pilot test is known as the Japanese Assessment of Listening Proficiency (ALP) pilot. The Japanese ALP pilot is innovative both in terms of pedagogy and technology. This pilot allows you and your students to experience our state-of-the-art assessment tool at absolutely no charge. Real-life tasks, delivered in streaming FLASH audio and video to your studentsÂ’ computers, are keyed to national standards. Results from the test will be immediately available to teachers on a password-protected website. With your help and participation, we gather data from students nationwide in order to offer the best possible language assessment tool to educators. 600 students have taken the ALP in the last couple of months and proved that the test delivery technology works smoothly.
