Communicating with Asia brings together an international team of leading researchers to discuss South, South-East, East and Central Asia, and explore Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi-Urdu, Malay, and Russian as major languages. The volume locates English inside a number of national, regional or lingua franca contexts and illustrates the way it develops in such contact situations. Local dynamics affecting languages in contact and cultural links of languages are dealt with, such as educational-political issues and tensions between conflicting norms. In today's global world, where the continent is an increasing area of focus, it is vital to explore what it means to 'understand' Asian cultures through English and other languages. This important new study will be of interest to students and researchers working in the fields of regional studies, English as a global language, Asian languages and cultural studies.

Many authors explore language reclamation in their own communities. Together, the authors call for expanded discourses on language planning and policy that embrace Indigenous ways of knowing and forefront grassroots language reclamation efforts as a force for Indigenous sovereignty, social justice, and self-determination. This year’s Oregon Indian Education Association (OIEA) conference focuses on the theme “Creating Spaces for Indigenous Education: Sharing our Struggles, Celebrating our Successes.” Through this theme, the OIEA conference seeks to recognize the countless ways Indigenous educators and communities create space for Indigenous education. Despite limited resources or a lack of institutional supports, Indigenous educators work tirelessly to create spaces that affirm Indigenous students, communities, and nations, and that recognize the importance of Indigenous languages, lifeways, and knowledges. We have started clubs, programs, and schools, created curriculum, and advocated for educational policy to reflect our priorities. This legacy of Indigenous education reflects important survivance work that should be shared and celebrated!

The United Nations at 75: Listening, Talking and Taking Action in a Multilingual World

This symposium will give particular attention to the question of language. Although the UN has always promoted dialogue, in recent years it has grown more sensitive to the need for equality in dialogue. In other words, it has become increasingly aware of the need to listen to its constituents rather than simply talking to them, and to understand as well as to be understood. Such concepts are inherent in the Sustainable Development Goals accepted in 2015 and setting the agenda for the UN as it grows closer to its first hundred years. In a world in which thousands of languages are spoken, is the UN ready for equal dialogue, now and in the future? If not, what is to be done to create linguistic readiness – both in the internal workings of the organization and in its relations with the larger world? These questions have particular relevance in 2019, the UN’s International Year of Indigenous Languages.
