Julie Ward writes about her decision to involve the students in her Introduction to Hispanic Literature and Culture course in the creation of an open source anthology. She writes, "My goal in leading students to create their own textbook was to help them learn the tools of literary research and give them an audience beyond the classroom or the campus. In small groups, students chose one of the texts studied in our Introduction to Hispanic Literature and Culture course and created a critical edition, complete with introductory information about the author, time period, and literary context; footnotes annotating various aspects of the text itself; and a bibliography for further study."

Bill in Congress Aims to Help ELL Teacher Shortage

The Reaching English Learners Act has been introduced in Congress in hopes of creating a solution to the national shortage of ELL teachers. The act would create a grant program under Title II of the Higher Education Act.
 
The grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to eligible teachers. The grants aim to ensure that teachers possess the knowledge necessary to effectively instruct English learners.
 
The grants will be awarded for up to five years and do the following:
 
• develop or strengthen an undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, or master’s teacher preparation program by integrating strategies for teaching English learners into the education curriculum and academic content;
• provide teacher candidates participating in a program with skills related to helping English learners achieve high levels in kindergarten, elementary schools and secondary schools;
• help ELLs achieve English proficiency;
• aid teachers in appropriately identifying and meeting the specific learning needs of children with disabilities who are English learners;
• aid teachers in recognizing and addressing the social and emotional needs of English learners;
• provide funds for teachers to promote parental, family, and community engagement in educational programs that serve English learners;
• provide work-based learning opportunities for teacher candidates participating in the program;
• provide teacher candidates with the required coursework to qualify for an English-as-a second-language endorsement or initial teaching credential
 
With at least 32 states in the U.S. suffering from ELL teaching shortages, the doors the grant would open could help struggling school districts find qualified bilingual teachers.

How Exploring the World Supports Making New Friends

Research has found that children with diverse friends have higher levels of social competence and increased self-esteem, well-being, and resilience. Students with cross-group friends also tend to be better at perspective-taking, which makes them better able to understand how children around them feel and more likely to think race-based discrimination is wrong. Research has also shown that children with cross-group friends show more leadership potential and are more popular. A recent study with middle school students found that students with more cross-ethnic friends felt less vulnerable and safer at school.

Global education is perfectly poised to take these benefits mainstream.

Greg Kessler writes, "One of my favorite resources for language teaching has been maps. There are so many ways that creative teachers can use maps to make engaging experiences for their students. With today’s digitally aggregated, crowdsourced, customized, and mashup map, the potential is even greater. Anyone can create maps that are individualized and customized to their own needs or interests. They can also contribute to online maps as a collaborative act of participatory culture. Websites such as Open Street Map, and the Open Cities Mapping Project are designed for individuals to contribute and co-construct a shared awareness of visual and geographical representation. The easiest of these is Google Maps.

"...Maps can also be used to immerse learners in authentic target language contexts. Google earth and street view creates opportunities for learners to navigate actual spaces as if they were present. We can walk down streets in advance of visiting a particular location. We can also engage in social media practices that connect to this kind of activity."
