Title: Professional Development Series: 2016 Materials Development for Online Language Courses

The National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) in collaboration with the North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is offering a professional development (PD) series titled “Materials Development for Online Language Courses” for online language instructors nationwide. The purpose of this series is to introduce instructors to principles and best practices for designing or adapting materials for online language classes. The series consists of five sessions covering three main topics:
• Adapting Existing Materials for Online Language Instruction
• Scaffolding to Facilitate Comprehension and Production
• Multimodal Approaches in Online Materials Development: Balancing Language Skills and Facilitating Differentiated Instruction
Sessions take place every Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) starting September 28 (the series runs September 28-October 26, 2015). Participants who successfully complete the series by attending webinar sessions and completing associated reflective tasks will earn a digital badge from NFLRC and may be eligible to earn a Continuing Education Unit (CEU) towards maintaining their professional qualifications. Teachers from NCVPS are automatically eligible; other educators will need to put NFLRC in contact with the awarding supervisor.

The program was created to develop future leaders for the profession at the state, regional, and national levels.

Modern African History: Colonialism, Independence and Legacies
November 2 - December 6, 2016
Target audience: grades 6-12 educators
This four-session online course will help you find new entry points in your curriculum for teaching about modern Africa and new strategies and resources to support your teaching. In a community of online learners you will advance your knowledge of African history in the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries, understanding the continent’s history not as a “single story” but a multifarious one. The course, as well, will emphasize Africa’s relationship to world historical developments. Course topics include European colonization, the multiple forms of African resistance to colonial control, the rise of independence movements and leaders, Africa’s experience of the Cold War, the political upheavals and economic crises of the late 20th century, and the hopes and challenges of the continent today. Each session will highlight a unique teaching strategy and explore exceptional web-based resources for the topic.

The 25th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC), will take place Saturday, October 8 at Echo Park Lake in Los Angeles.
The festival, the City of Los Angeles’ Filipino American Event, is the longest-running Filipino cultural celebration in Southern California. Audiences can expect to enjoy traditional and contemporary Filipino food, music, dance, crafts and culture.
This year’s theme, “Samu’t Sari: Showcasing the Diverse Creative Tapestry of the FilAm Community,” lends its meaning to the Tagalog phrase samu’t sari, which loosely translates to “diversity.”

Title: Reischauer Scholars Program for Intensive Study of Japan

The Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP) is an online course for high school students sponsored by the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI).
Currently entering its fourteenth year, the RSP provides students with a broad overview of Japanese history, literature, religion, art, politics, economics, and contemporary society, with a special focus on the U.S.–Japan relationship. Ambassadors, top scholars, and experts throughout the United States and Japan provide online lectures and engage students in live discussion sessions. RSP students will interact with the Japanese high school students of the Stanford e-Japan Program, deepening their mutual cross-cultural understanding and broadening their global perspectives. Students also complete readings and weekly assignments, with the coursework culminating in an independent research project. Final research projects are printed in journal format, and students are also required to lead two presentations on Japan at their schools or in their local communities. Students who successfully complete the course will earn Stanford Continuing Studies Program (CSP) credit and a Certificate of Completion from SPICE, Stanford University.
Selected students will participate in 10 "virtual classes" via the Internet between February and June 2017. Students should expect to allot 4–6 hours per week to complete the lectures, discussions, readings, and assignments. Since this is a distance-learning course, however, students can structure most of the work around their individual schedules. Although intensive, the RSP will equip participants with a rare degree of expertise about Japan that may have a significant impact on their choice of study and future career. Students do not need to know the Japanese language to participate in this course. There is a student fee for books and the Stanford Continuing Studies credits.
All application materials must be postmarked by October 14, 2016.
