Beyond Language Boundaries: Multimodal Use in Multilingual Contexts
Edited by Marta Fernández-Villanueva and Konstanze Jungbluth
Published by De Gruyter Mouton

The way speakers in multilingual contexts develop own varieties in their interactions sheds light on code switching and multimodal dynamic co-constructions of grammar in use. This volume explores the intersection of multimodality and language use of multilingual speakers.

Firstly, theoretical frames are discussed and empirical studies involving Catalan, German and Spanish as L1, L2 or FL are presented interconnecting verbal and gestural modalities into grammar description or exploring actions as sources for gestures, which may nonverbally represent the argument in German dynamic motion verbs. Other chapters focus on positionings in interviews, lexical access searches or proxemics in greetings and farewells.

The contributions secondly focus on verbal features of language use in multilingual contexts related to self-representation and co-construction of identity through code-switching, deixis or argumentative reasoning in different communicative events based on multilingual data of languages including Croatian, English, Italian, Brazilian-Portuguese and Polish.

The findings call for a reviewed conception of grammar description with implications also for the conceptualization of deixis, for L2/foreign language acquisition and language teaching policies.

L2 Learning, Teaching and Assessment: A Comprehensible Input Perspective
By Nihat Polat
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book explores second language (L2) learning, teaching and assessment from a comprehensible input (CI) perspective. This focus on the role of input is important for deepening our understanding of interactions between the learner, teacher and the environment as well as of the nature of the learning, teaching and assessment processes. The book takes a blended approach that promotes the intertwining of theory, research and practice in L2 pedagogy and assessment and aims to address the commonly used concept of CI and its role in L2 education. Content includes a comprehensive discussion of the conceptual foundation of CI; a multimodal and dynamic interpretation of CI from numerous perspectives; a critical discussion of well-known L2 acquisition theories and research; a practical examination of the role of multimodal forms of CI in L2 pedagogy; an analytical review of factors to be considered when modifying CI for pedagogical purposes in different settings and an overview of CI in L2 assessment. It will be of interest to students in the fields of L2 learning, teaching and assessment, teachers in second/foreign language settings and researchers of SLA and teacher education.

Language Teaching and the Older Adult: The Significance of Experience
By Danya Ramírez Gómez
Published by Multilingual Matters

The aging of the population and the increasing number of older adults pursuing foreign language courses call for a greater understanding of the ways in which these individuals learn foreign languages. This book offers a pioneering contribution to the literature on foreign language education for older adults (aged 60 and over), termed foreign language geragogy. It details an empirical, multidisciplinary study on Japanese older learners of Spanish and focuses on the influence of learning experiences on vocabulary learning strategy use. It discusses the constraints that preconceptions impose on learners, researchers, instructors and administrators, and it offers a set of practical recommendations for foreign language activities for elderly individuals. It also introduces the notion of ‘learner re-training’, an instructional mechanism that contributes to older learners' self-acknowledgment and autonomy development in foreign language learning. The book is directed at teachers and trainee teachers of foreign languages to older adults, and also at education professionals and researchers in the field of foreign language learning in general.

Title: Call for Papers: 39th Language Testing Research Colloquium
Body:

From http://www.iltaonline.com/LTRC/index.php/ltrc2017

39th Language Testing Research Colloquium
July 17–21, 2017
Universidad de los Andes
Las Aguas, Bogotá, Colombia
July 17–18 preconference workshops
July 19–21 39th LTRC
Theme: Language Assessment Literacy Across Stakeholder Boundaries

LTRC 2017 marks a milestone for the assessment community as the International Language Testing Association will meet for the first time in Latin America. LTRC 2017’s venue reminds us of the tremendous growth our field has experienced, in part from engaging with language testers in different contexts across a variety of language testing issues. Accordingly, as we explore different stakeholder territories, the theme of language assessment literacy (LAL) seems appropriate as we strive to build understanding among different stakeholders in an effort to learn from their perspectives and to generate new knowledge in LAL research.

While all proposals will be considered for LTRC 2017, preference will be given to proposals which highlight understandings of and tensions between the different skills, knowledge, and competencies of language assessment literacy as they interact with different assessment stakeholders—including the specialists themselves—in the ecologies of their particular contexts. Examples include, but are not restricted to:

•    language assessment research as related to language policy and policy makers;
•    validation research that includes bi-directional collaborations with assessment stakeholders;
•    assessment literacy in relation to the assessment of languages other than English;
•    investigations of the sociocultural context in relation to assessment literacy;
•    examinations of differential knowledge and assessment literacy needs of different stakeholder groups.

The proposal deadline is October 2, 2016.
