| Body | From http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=1426&DID=12600 Selecting and Using Literature with English Learners in Grades K–8 Nancy L. Hadaway Thursday, October 29, 2009 3:00 pm–4:30 pm Eastern Daylight Time To develop English language learners’ (ELLs’) proficiency, packaged literacy programs have been developed with an emphasis on skills. Although these packages may bring about short-term gains in proficiency, ELLs need access to more diverse language to participate fully in the curriculum. Literature offers supportive text at varying proficiency levels and with tremendous diversity across genres. This seminar explains criteria for matching children’s books to ELLs of varying proficiency levels in grades K–8. The presenter considers linguistic proficiency levels as well as cultural, experiential, and conceptual background in terms of developing criteria to help teachers match the book to the learner. The presenter also demonstrates techniques for using the literature for instruction. Learn more and register at http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=1426&DID=12600 |
