The International Baccalaureate Approach to Native Language Study

In IB programs, teachers recognize that language is central to learning, but that no language is transparent or neutral in terms of meaning. Professional development programs attempt to support schools in maintaining the mother tongue because that first language is “central to cognitive development” and because these truly bilingual students bring extra insight to their classes.
