CALL FOR PAPERS - Special Issue of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics on Aviation English

The Australian Review of Applied Linguistics will publish a special issue on Aviation English in December 2009, to be guest-edited by John Read (University of Auckland) and Ute Knoch (University of Melbourne). Their particular interest is in the language assessment of pilots and air traffic controllers engaged in international aviation, in relation to the current implementation of the English language proficiency requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

More specifically, they welcome proposals for papers on the following topics:
-Analysis of communicative language needs in international aviation
-Issues in the design and implementation of tests for aviation personnel
-The development and validation of particular tests to meet ICAO requirements
-Issues in the implementing of ICAO requirements by national civil aviation authorities
-Case studies of aviation personnel affected by the ICAO policy

Completed papers must be no longer than 5000 words.

Proposals for papers (including author(s), title and an abstract of 200-250 words) should be sent to John Read (ja.read@auckland.ac.nz) and Ute Knoch (uknoch@unimelb.edu.au) by Friday 27 February 2009. The editors will confirm the acceptance of proposals by mid-March.

Because of the relatively tight production schedule, authors must be able to meet these deadlines:

Monday 15 June Submission of full paper for review
Monday 17 August Submission of final version after review and revision
