Aotearoa native, Katarina Edmonds, did her doctoral work at UH-Hilo's Hawaiian Language College on an issue that directly benefits the Kura Kaupapa Maori, the counterpart of Hawai'i's immersion Program. Katrina has created a tool to assess the fluency of Maori students. While such a tool helps to validate the academic rigor of native language programs, its real value is strengthening from within, not just proving something to outsiders.
