Distance learning gives small districts options

In Minnesota, high school students can study Mandarin Chinese or American Sign Language through distance learning programs. When Chinese professor Bai Bing came to Nicollet High School on a grant program, the SOCRATES distance learning program was able to secure her as an instructor for an interactive-TV course. Nineteen students signed up, making it one of SOCRATES' most popular offerings. According to a study released this month by the Sloan Consortium, more than 20 percent of all post-secondary students are enrolled in at least one online course — double the percentage from just five years ago.
