Students run around the playground, learn in air-conditioned classrooms and study a foreign language during a typical day at Ben Gamla Charter School. That's a far cry from the campus' rocky start a year ago.

Months of debate — much at the national level — ensnared the Hollywood school when it opened last year amid controversy that centered on complicated questions: Could Hebrew be taught without promoting a religion? Could the school open after failing to meet fire and safety codes? The answer to both: yes.
